Hey guys,

I'm going to be ordering a new Criterion savage barrel soon but I have a few questions and hopefully someone can help. I'm building an all around hunting / target rifle and going with a heavy sporter 1:8 twist. I plan to shoot 130 -140 gr projectiles.

My question is Criterion offers their standard freebore .118" or their match freebore .160". It will be on a long action so their is no issue with COAL. What would be my best choice on freebore?

Re: New 260 Rem Savage barrel help

I just got my criterion .260 for my savage Thursday and took it to the range today. Mine is the bull profile but it is the match barrel at least I'm pretty sure it is. Says .260 Rem Match on the barrel. There's pics of the best 100yrd group and a 200yrd group I shot today in this thread.

That load is a 140 amax seated .20thou off the lands and I loaded some at the end of the day that are .40thou off the lands. The ones .40thou off measured 2.827 overall length. I will try and remember to let you know how they shoot with the ones pushed back farther after my range trip tomorrow.

Re: New 260 Rem Savage barrel help

From what I have heard / read, the longer freebore is for the 140 class bullets. There were some on SavageShooters that had issues with the shorter freebore and the bullet had to seat a little deeper to keep off the lands. With the longer freebore, that is no longer an issue. I just ordered the Match freebore yesterday from Jim. He says he's getting some in next week so mine should ship by mid week next week.
