I am getting ready to build a Rock with the McMillan A4 and the saddle cheek piece and a 22 inch barrel with a removable magazine. Is the Templar action something that should be added? Is it that much better than the Remington 700 action/bolt and why? Please help with my decision...

Re: New GAP Rifle build

While the M700 SA is a real decent action, it always has to be worked to get the true accuracy potential out of it. On the other hand, a custom
action comes ready to shoot, no trueing or lapping needed. Problem is a the cost of all the work on a Remington is nearly the same as a custom. Plus in the end, all you have is a Remington. With a Custom, such as the Templar, you have a much higher resale.

I used to use Remingtons, but Stillers are the logical choice for me now.

Re: New GAP Rifle build

I think this is really a good question for George to answer. But, I just got a M40A3 from GAP and the receiver is a Remington 700 that is worked over by GAP. If I had them do a Templar would it have been any different in shooting? I don't think so but the question you have to ask is how much more will you spend?
And, does that extra money give you anything extra? Resale: maybe, but I think any GAP rifle that shows up on the Hide for resale that has the GAP logo on it has a pretty good reputation and the resale is set accordingly.

This really comes down to you – do you want the cool looking Templar logon on your receiver? – it does look nice. If it not that much more money I would do it but I don’t think it will give you any more accuracy. They are pretty accurate already and that rest comes down to you.

What you are discribing is not really a "Rock". Sounds like you would be better served to call Kerry and chat with him about your ideas, and build something to your liking.

I have two trued M700's from GAP and they are kick ass. However the Templar is sure nice too.

Re: New GAP Rifle build

I have had several blueprinted 700 actions and a whole bunch of custom actions. Of the custom actions I have owned to date those made by Glen Harrison are my favorite. The Templar is a Glen Harrison action built to GAP specs.

In building a hunting or tactical rifle If I already have a Remmy action, I will have it blueprinted and use it. If I need to acquire a new action for my build it will be custom.

There are a lot of top rifle smiths out there that will tell you there is no difference in accuracy between custom and blueprinted Remmy action, and there may not be. However, by the time you spend the money to bring the Remmy up close to custom specs you are spending close to custom money. When considering the cost of bringing the Remmy up to custom spec, don't forget the cost of reaming the receiver raceways and purchasing a new bolt. I have also found that when selling one of my rigs I am usually able to sell one with a custom action for a few hundred more than a Remmy. Good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong with either.

You should do a search on here for this topic. "factory actions vs custom"
This topic has been asked to many times. A custom action is better because its always going to be designed to exact tolerances (eliminates the need for blueprinting) and be more rugged. Plus you have the option that a scope rail can be machined in which will make your setup more rigid and one less break point.
