So apparently there is zero info about this new Geco 7.62 x 51 168 BTHP match with AMTC head stamp.
Guess I'll give it a go. This was $18.97 a box on St. Patrick's day sale last week. I picked up a case, hell I'm your Huckleberry for $19 a box.
Don't ask it's gone now & not even listed on the sight I purchased from anymore. I didn't post about it on here at the time because I didn't know if it was any good.
Got a chance to try it at the range this weekend & compare it to FGMM.
I'd still like to know what the deal is with the AMTC Brass, but Google comes up goose eggs on this as to origin. The only thread I found trying to narrow down origin of this AMTC brass was for 5.56 in 2020 and consensus was it is Swiss made?
First I fired 5 rounds each with the Magnetospeed V3.......... 308 FGMM 168 BTHP vs. Geco 7.62 x 51 168 BTHP Match.
308 v 7.62 is the opposite of .223 v 5.56, whereas 308 is typically hotter/faster then the mil version. That's what I was expecting.........nope.
FGMM COAL = 2.800 will edit to add BTO once I measure it.
Geco COAL = 2.772-2.785 (could be the cause of increased ES/SD) will edit to add BTO
Gun used was DPMS 308 Proof CF 18" 11T
FGMM 168 mean velocity 2531
Geco 168 mean velocity 2581
All fired brass looks good. No pressure signs & functioned perfect.
Did I mention the wind was 15-40mph from my 10!
I then tried to put a 5 round group together of each @100y using, bipod, rear bag, prone. It grouped pretty well considering the wind & me being a little out of practice on the large frame with 3.5 lb trigger. Honestly the difference in group is horizontal not vertical as I'd expect with the larger ES/SD, so it's likely to have been me.
I then went straight to 500y steel for the last 10 rounds of each for some fun in the wind + a couple double taps to here that satisfying 2 x ding after second shot. Performed great at distance. If it ever comes back in stock I'll be buying more.
The Geco did not have as good an ES/SD vs FGMM, however the meplats are cleaner on their version of the 168 & HP has a bit bigger opening.
