Howdy all-

Looking for some opinions / suggestions on some new glass for a 40X .22lr build I will be finishing next month.

I am torn between the Sightron SIII 6-24x50mm with the MOA-2 reticle which has a min. focus distance of 40yards

http://swfa.com/Sightron-6-24x50-SIII-30mm-Riflescope-P48419.aspx

and the 6-24x42 Mil-Dot SII Big Sky with the adjustable objective that focuses down to 10 yards.

http://swfa.com/Sightron-6-24x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9172.aspx

The rifle will be used for bench work at 50 and 100 yards, plinking out as far as possible and the occasional rabbit hunt.

Any opinions or recommendations??

Re: New Glass for Custom 40X Build

my opinion is get more glass than you can afford, esp for a nice rifle such as that.

what happens is you find out how sweet a really accurate 22 is and you start stretching its legs. pretty soon ur bustin clays at 400 yds. if ur wondering that's 21.5 mils at my da of 6500 with wolf mt.

pt being you want a scope capable of reaching these distances, ie dialing.
at least 20 mils of dialable elec will be appreciated.

to get there, get a 30 moa base. don't even think about going less. this is 2-fold reason. one, more elev in scope, two, it creates a poor boys zero stop.

with a 22, 10 mil knobs are really sweet. I would start there.

next, you want a rect small enough not to cover target at close range. pt being 1st focal plain not necessary, but nice if you have.

if ur spending custom 40x money, eat roman noodles for another couple months and get a scope the rifle would be proud of.

I started off with a zeiss 4-14, and soon found out about elevation probs. so I then went to a NF 5-22 with npr1 rect and loved it other than no high speed knobs. I was 7 revs in just to get to 400 yds. weak. so then I got a good deal on a 3-15 NF with high speed and zs. very Speer but now I realized I couldn't spot my hits on paper at 200 yds for the rim fire comp further up in this site. so I then got the swfa as 5-20. this scope for all my needs and I have not looked bak. ten mil knobs, lots of elev travel, and the rect allows for very very precise aiming if you dial one mil in and use hollow diamonds. this allowed me to clean the short range rim fire comp up above in this section.

anyways I hope my worthless opinion helps.

oh and ur rifle specs would be nice as well

Re: New Glass for Custom 40X Build

I have both of those scopes. The SIII is somewhat brighter and I do like the the side focus. The advantage of the SII is that it is lighter and almost as good. I have the Sii on my smallbore sillywet rifles and they are great! Both have a great support and very repeatable adjustments. Steven

Re: New Glass for Custom 40X Build

Thanks for the input!!!! I was offered a SIII with the MOA-2 reticle for a great price. I hear the glass on the SIII is nearly as nice as Nightforce. Be interesting to compare it to my 5.5-22x56.

Thanks again

Re: New Glass for Custom 40X Build

i would get the bigsky...1 reason being there's a $100 off rebate going right now....and it's the exact same glass as the SIII. The regular SII is NOT the same, but the SII Bigsky IS. The only difference that matters being the 1" tube...but that does NOT really effect how much light enters as much as it does available elevation. Both are fantastic and track as good and look as good as nightforce

Have not used a nightforce, most of my other scopes are leupolds and the SIII is MUCH brighter and really is great glass, My SII is also a BigSky and is great, just not quite as good as the SIII. Steven

Re: New Glass for Custom 40X Build

I ended up ordering a SIII 6-24x50 with the MOA-2 reticle from Scott at Liberty Optics. Should be here next week, excited to make the comparison and see what everyone raves about!
