Figured it was time to quit lurking and create an account. Shoot mainly pistol matches but slowly getting into shooting long range again. Taking a one day long range class this weekend. Can't wait to see what I will learn from it.

Actually in a jennings. Few folks selling crawfish, but nothing of any real size yet. I usually wait till mid-late Feb before I start buying.
Next time you’re in Scott, grab some Pepperjack Boudin balls from Billy’s also.
I just moved from Ascension to Livingston about a year ago. New to the forums and just diving into long distance shooting. What range do you shoot at?
Palo Alto in Donaldsonville. I also make the drive down to FTS in Cutoff every now and then.
Good deal. Honestly, I didn't know we had outdoor ranges with some good distance that close to us. I might have to bring my AR out there and test my limits with it and try to get to talking to some of the guys that shoot long range out here. I haven't bought my first rifle yet, still trying to figure out the odds and ends and what direction I'm gonna go with it.
Palo Alto is a private members only range. It has a 50 yard general use line, a 100 yard line, a 200 yard line with a few small steel hangers, a 600 yard line with firing positions every hundered yards. FTS goes out to 950 yards with steel placed at random intervals starting at 200 yards. $25 a day to shoot. It's a cool place but a far drive.
I have no problem paying in for a membership to go shoot out in Donaldsonville and I go to Grand Isle pretty often so Cut Off will just have to be a stop on my way! How long have you been shooting?
White Feather in Leesville is still a little drive for you but it's where I'm going to be shooting when I can't drive north of Shreveport to my family farm to stretch out and practice with coyotes. Think White Feather goes out to 700 yards. West Louisiana Precision Rifle has their matches there. You can can look them up on Facebook. The matches this year are April 27, June 1, August 31, October 5.
If you're interested in a membership I would go to the website and submit an application. New members are usually only accepted once a year in March. I was able to get in last year. They did a half year sign up in September. I've been shooting in one form or another as long as I can remember. I shot a few of the FPR matches out on Palo Alto back in 2013 but gave it up because of the commute at the time. I've been back into it seriously for the last year or so.
I will have no problem traveling for matches and days with other shooters once I get a little more into it and get some knowledge. I have a pretty decent understanding of mils from my time in the Marine Corps, but being an automatic rifleman there wasn't much adjusting of the sights or one shot one hit situations lol
I'm at work at the moment but once I get a little more time to read up I will definitely sign up and it'll have to be soon I see. I need to get a rifle. I'm thinking of getting a Remington 700 chambered in .308 or 6.5 and building it as I grow. On the other hand I also have a buddy trying to cut me a deal on an almost brand new .338 Lapua in a Savage platform and on a Remington 700 .300 win mag action brand new.
A lot of the same guys shoot the pistol matches, and it's a good bit of Marines and active army. Great bunch of guys and gals to be around. Dont care what kind of equipment you have as long as you are safe and have fun.
One of the other post you where talking about getting a Remington 700. I've got the 20 inch 5R gen2 and love it. Only thing I'm having to do is add a detachable magazine for competition. Which has me thinking about going to a chassis or another stock vs fitting different metal to the stock.
Welcome to the forum! I’m in Bossier City and I shoot the matches in Leesville (pistol at CSS and long range at White Feather) and Prince when I can. I’ve only been shooting long range for a few years and I’m hooked!
For range days/practice, I shoot at Long Range Alley just south of Shreveport

Welcome to you, too, man and Semper Fi brother. If you’re just starting out, I’d stay away from those magnums. A .308 or a 6.5 is a solid choice and can reach out. If you see yourself shooting these PRS type matches, I’d stick with a short action.
Depending on budget, there are options now that weren’t available even a few years ago that are absolute lasers for under $2,000
Semper Fi brother, the Magnum options I'm looking at buying are more or less because one of the guys I work with blows money on guns like everyday is Christmas. He bought a brand new .338 Lapua in the Savage 110 Hunter platform I believe it was and he didn't like it. Then he bought a Remington 700 new in .300 WM and before putting the first round through the pipe, got it built. So now he has a .338 Lapua and a brand new .300 WM action he's trying to offload pretty cheap to me.
And you can't run around talking about lasers to an 11... All I heard when I seen that is Space Force and I almost pulled into a recruiting office again. On a series note though ( space force is serious too) but 2k for a solid set up would be a reasonable starting point

He's a grown man, plus the more he buys and doesn't like the more I have a chance to buy cheaper, lol. I seen that rifle on this page and I do like it. I'd like to build something similar for sure
Were you at the toy drive match in December? I remember talking to a dude there about long range shooting and wondering if that was you.
Unfortunately it wasn't me, work and general life only allowed me to make 2 matches at the beginning of 2018. Things are finally getting where I can attend again.
ETA is does long range ally still require a member to vouch for you to shoot there? Haven't looked into them in a few years.

You have to be with a member to shoot there. I think it’s only $10 to shoot for the day. And you have to qualify before shooting on the thousand yard range (shoot a 2” 5-shot group at 100 and a 4” group at 200).
They have 1,000 yard prone matches every month and 600yd every other month. I’ve been meaning to get out to one. http://lrsl-llc.com/
I might start going to LRA on Friday mornings when I get off work since I'll be right down the road. Don't have a spotter setup yet but if you ever need some to spot with a rifle scope let me know and I'll come out and try.
You’re more than welcome to come shoot if we can coordinate it one day. Most of the time I can spot my impacts, and I’ve got a spotting scope as well. It’s a good place and the $215/year is fair for what they offer.
