New to the hide. After a week or so of some reading, seems like endless information here. Learned a lot already, look forward to learning more.

Picked up a Remington 700 pss, Leupold Mark4 M1, and lots of ammo. Next is some good rings, base, and a bi-pod.

Suggestions are welcome. I'm from NJ. Name is Mike.

Welcome Mike. Now prepare to spend your money like you're mad at it.

Skim bedding your current H-S Precision stock will net you awesome gains if you're not going to sell it off and upgrade to another stock. Personally I went with a Harris SBRM 6-9'' bipod. I also went to http://t-nuts.com/index.php?cPath=73&osCsid=26cbbba5bced2cc6b4106f49dbbf8674 for the pod-loc lever as it's way cheaper than other places. Wouldn't hurt to get a Triad Tactical Wedgie either if you don't already have one. Good luck from one n00ber to another. Oh, and definitely get better rings and base for that scope because I learned that the hard way with a Burris XTR/EGW setup... never again.

Re: New guy from NJ

Well, since you guys answer so fast, heres my questions for you. Id like flip open covers for the scope as well. Its a leupold mark 4 M1 10x. Do i just measure the front and rear and use those measurements for the covers?

Wheres the cheapest place for the harris bipod? Is there site vendor that sell them?

Luckily, i get ammo for free. So i will save money there. I know badger ordnance makes good rings, i might opt for them. Bedding will wait, i may swap to a different stock next year.

http://www.deathfromafar.com/info/info_scopecaps.pdf for scope cap measurements.

I personally went to amazon.com for the bipod cause I have amazon prime account and got it under $100 2-day shipping.

I switched to Badger Ordnance also (Steel). People like Seekins if you really want aluminum or Nightforce ultra lights which are titanium alloy I think.

Edit: I'm super jealous about your free ammo but would also recommend you to get some match ammo to see what your baseline accuracy is on your rifle. 168gr. FGMM does the job for me.

Well free ammo is good but save that shit for your spray and pray guns. You might get lucky with a factory load but most of us didn't have happy shooting rifles until we started reloading.

Ammo is federal gold medal match, 168gr. Barrell only has 40 rounds through it. Thanks for the help on the links!

I will not be reloading any time soon.

Re: New guy from NJ

In NJ, the Marine Corps League has (or had) a pretty inclusive shooting comp program, with the Carlos Hatchcock match each year at Cherry Ridge, among other programs. You might want to look into them.

If 'the man' is providing you with ammo, it's because that's the ammo they want you to be using on the job. I'd suggest you do just that, and become quite familiar with its performance as well. I'm pretty sure my advice about that is way redundant. For liabilty reasons, it's usually a good idea to do your 'on the job' shooting with stuff the bosses own, and not your own. It can also help prevent your personal gear from disappearing into 'evidence locker limbo'.

Not sure how far up NJ you are, but we get regular attendance at Bridgeville Rifle and Pistol Club in Delaware by New Jerseyvites. Next mid-range F-class is October 9th.

Good luck
