hello to everyone,

sorry in advance if this is posted in the wrong spot.

I'm new to the forum, but have been doing a lot of reading the past few days and decided I would join. So my question is about ammunition for M1A. I am looking to buy one, but I have read that it needs surplus NATO ammo, and that buying 308 win rounds are slightly off in comparison, but when I checked on the Springfield Armory page under caliber is says 308 win. This would be my first M1A and I have just started looking into getting it, figured I would get the best info here, there seems to be a lot of experts and experience. I don't want to be shooting the wrong ammo and ruin my rifle. Thanks for any help you can give and FNG.

Ken

Re: New Guy with a question

A rifle that is chambered for .308 can shoot 7.62NATO but you can't shoot .308 in a 7.62 like 5.56 NATO can shoot .223 but a .223 chamber is meant for just .223 unless it's WYLDE chambered. Hope this helps.

Re: New Guy with a question

You can buy Fed American Eagle 7.62 ammo in boxes marked "For M1A". I have no idea why this ammo is so marked.

Re: New Guy with a question

American Eagle ammo marked "For M1A" is loaded lighter than ammo not marked as such. This allows the M1A to cycle without excessive wear on the bolt or op-rod.

7.62 x 51 NATO and .308 Winchester are dimensionally identical, and one can be substituted for the other -- there is no difference.

Now, 5.56 x 45 NATO and .223 Remington are very close, but still not the same. Breaking it down, 5.56 chambers are good to shoot both; .223 chambers are good for .223 only.

Now, seeing as the OP is looking for ammo specifically for the M1A, either go for the AE marked "M1A" only, or you can reload for your rifle using standard .308 Winchester dies.

Ummm... Wrong! Actually, just the part about 7.62X51 vs. .308...

Thanks for pointing that out, no more writing with the 7 month old on my lap crying. Makes it hard to type and think. LOL
