My daughter graduated from hunters safety this morning. She has been shooting for a couple of years now. I promised her that if she passed the course I would buy her a rifle. Anyone got any youth model Remington 700's laying around that they are not using anymore? At this point I'm not sure who is more excited, but I want to get her tooled up with her own rifle so that she can shoot it all summer.

Re: New Hunters Safety Grad!!

I'm kicking around the idea of a 7mm-08. I don't think that it would be too much recoil for her, she's already 5 foot 2 inches tall and 105 pounds. To top it all off she shoots both eyes open. My first rifle was a 220 swift, which I still have, but a deal is a deal, she gets her own. I don't have much laying around for glass, I can't spoil her with a Schmidt...yet!

Nice! You've got me chomping at the bit for this fall! I've got a lefty coming up in the ranks as well. Now I'm wondering if that rifle is available in a left hand .223. I'd like to get her some time on a small center fire. She shots my right hand rifles but you know how well that works.

Re: New Hunters Safety Grad!!

I'd go with a fast twist .243.....almost all of her hunting is going to be deer and entelope over where you guys are. If and when she draws out an elk permit she could just borrow your Surgeon .308....both of my boys are deadly with my .308's but they are pretty heavy rifles(12-17lbs.) so the recoil is managable. A lightweight harder kicking rifle might get a younger shooter into a flinching habit. A light 7/08 will belt her a lot more than a .243. Plus you already have reloading equipment for the .243.

Tell her congrats for passing her hunters safety!!

I'm kicking that idea around pretty hard as well, but wait a minute you can't kill elk with a .308

! That and I'm going to get a lighter one built...because, well I really need another one!
