Hello all,

I am currently looking for a new hunting rifle which I plan to go out west with for mule deer, caribou, possibly bear, and a few other huntin' trips. However, I am torn between a Remington 700 BDL 7mm Rem. Mag, or a 700 LSS .300 Win Mag. What do you guys prefer? I already have plenty of 06's and .308's. Just need some help choosing. All help is appreciated!

thanks for such a quick response, I was thinking anywhere from 3-400 yards MAX, I shot a mule deer at 256 last year with my 308, Im just looking for something alittle bigger/flatter at longer range.

i have to say with bear & elk in the mix i wouldn't buy either i would go to a 338 win mag since your max range is only 400yds. load up some heavy bullets and hitem hard and stopem in there tracks

just my .02cents

I shoot a 7 mag... I LOVE IT! I even have it on an Encore frame. My dad has been using a 7mag for years. He has taken many different species of north American big game... Everything from Alaskan Yukon Moose to Stone sheep to Mulies, elk, caribou, deer, antelope...

I love its flat shooting and less recoil then the 300. My friend has the exact same encore I do, but only in the 300 vs. my 7mag and he cannot stand the recoil.
The 7mag can do everything that 300 can! and for less on the shoulder and wallet!

I hunted for years and years in West Texas with a Browning BBR 7 Mag (175gr SGK). Lots of shots in the 3-400 range and a few beyond that. One shot always dropped mulies or white-tail. No rangefinders back then, just eyeballed the holdover with a plain duplex reticle zeroed at 200. I never felt the recoil in the field but it could get pretty brutal working up loads.

I don't think Tock Rucky believes you, oh well.

My observations so take them with a grain of "I heard them on the interwebz"... The really high BC 7's are 175 and 180gr, the high BC 30 cals start at 208gr up to 225gr which translates into alot less felt recoil for the 7's. The 7mm Rem Mag has the same base diameter as the 300WM which means you can use AI 300 mags for the 7RM. The standard OAL of the 7mm RM is about a 1/4" shorter than the 300WM so if you want to use a DBM you can seat the 7's out where the base of the bullet is up in the neck (I won't explain why this is good because there is tons of info on this site why and they explain it better than I can). The 300WM is a fine round but for the reasons above I plan to start building a 7mm RM this fall rather than a 300WM. Good luck whichever way you go and YMMV.

Rock Tucky, who are you "doubting"? Thanks for all the advice on the 7 mags. I just placed the order for my 700 BDL-DM chambered in 7mm Mag. now all I need to do is start experimenting with some loads, I am leaning towards 140 SGK or 160 SGK with 4350 powder, anyone have any experience with either bullet?

if the twist is 1-9 1/8" (remington's norm for the 7mm) then why not shoot the Amax?

Re: New hunting rifle, 7mm Mag or .300 Mag ?

I am going to look into the AMAX bullets, I was under the impression that 160 grain bullet was the max to load for 7mm mag for a 24" barrel.

Length of barrel doesn't have anything to do with it. The barrel twist will determine how heavy/long of a bullet you can shoot.

Re: New hunting rifle, 7mm Mag or .300 Mag ?

You can't go wrong with a 7mm Rem Mag. Agree with all the previous positive satements above. Been using the 7 since the early 70's. Liked the caliber so much, I picked up a GAP some time back (which, BTW is a tackdriver as all GAPs are). Though I do reload, there is a wide selection of factory ammo options available in the event you are in a crunch. This is always a consideration for a hunting rifle - knowing you can even go to (God forbid) WallyWorld and pick up some decent ammo.

I have a remington 700 sps in 300 win mag and if i had it to do over again i would have choose the 7mm. Nothing wrong with the 300 but could have done away with a little recoil and keep just as flat of trajectory.

Re: New hunting rifle, 7mm Mag or .300 Mag ?

Back in my "bigger is better" days, I carried a .338 with 210 Noslers out on a Montana backpack elk hunt (one of many) and my partner carried a 7Rem Mag with 160 grain Sierras. We found a pair of bulls out at close to 500 yards. Couldn't get closer because we were across a narrow but deep valley. I hit mine 5 times in the chest. He fired once. Both fell dead within 12 feet of each other. Made a believer of me. The 7 Mag is big enough for anything south of the Canadian border. IMHO
