new kestrel?

Re: new kestrel?

mmmmmmmm........... I've used it at the Show... I do not change my 4500 NV BT with the new one.... ballistic software must match with a rugged PDA, if you want and you need it...
FDAC as a back up, or primary system if do not agree electronc system.
best PDA, NOMAD, or the other one from Asbury, second one Pharos...... best software FFS....

Re: new kestrel?

Re: new kestrel?

Slightly OT, but is the Horus Atrag software really worth $300? Is there something it will do that say the Nightforce software won't do? Have no experience with either, but I'm curious.
Will probably buy a Kestrel 4500 Bluetooth soon to use with Shooter on my Android phone, as I have no need for an ultra-rugged all-in-one unit.
So other than having ballistic software integrated in a Kestrel, is there really that much of a difference between the Atrag and other quality software?

Re: new kestrel?

i like my shooter app a little bit more than atrag. mostly because shooter automatically grabs the info based on gps etc and will download from kestral. allso shooter seems to be slighty nore accurate compared to my real world gathered data.

Re: new kestrel?

We have both the 4000NV, the 4500 and 4500NV and have used the 4500's for just over a year. They are simple to operate and you can set up a user screen to give you the input you need for the ATRAG software (which we also have and use.)

I don't know about the Bluetooth option because we don't use that; however, the 4500 makes life a whole lot easier, It is a durable piece of gear, My only complaint would be about the battery shield for the compass operation. It means you must be a bit more deliberate if you are changing batteries in the field.

Both the ATRAG and Kestrel weather stations we use in conjunction with the Horus H-25 reticle.

I have to say I have not used the Nightforce software but I do use the Horus Atrag MX in conjunction with their reticle. It would be my estimate that NF would be very adequate if you were using a mildot, tmr or similar reticle; however, ATRAG and a horus reticle at 600, 700, 800 or 900 yds is the cat's meow. Correct information into the Atrag gives you a correct hold point ( not just a hold estimate but a point ) and should you need a second shot, the shooter can usually see and make the adjustment very quickly. We just purchased a new NF NXS F1 with the Horus H-58 reticle. One thing we don't need to worry about is the software to drive it.

Bottom line:
Is it worth $300.... It's worth $290.00 (the MX version) to us. We use them with the TDS Recon PDA's and have had no issues for two years.

I think you'd be a lot better off, if you don't have an Iphone, to buy an Ipod Touch, and get a copy of any of the good programs which run on that platform.

Frankly, if I didn't have a Kestrel, I'd buy a 4500, and build a density altitude dope card.

I have a Kestrel 4500, and two platforms both running very good ballistic programs. Mostly what I use is the Kestrel to calculate the density altitude, which I then use with my DA dope card.

Another option, if you use one of the loads covered by it, is the Field Density Altitude Compensator.

But I think Atrag is ridiculously overpriced.

Re: new kestrel?

I know this post is old but can anyone confirm if you can send data from the Kestrel to the Recon via bluetooth or hard wired and it update automatically in ATrag? Wanna know before I spend 75 bucks on a bluetooth card for my Recon.
