First post and thought I would get some feedback and advice on a current build.
First off I am kind of old school – no M4’s or anything like that in the safe. Shortest AR barreled rifle I own is an 18 inch rifle length gas system “bargain bin” CMMG that shoots like a champ. Other rifles are A2 and A1 styles built on McKay or NoDak lowers using Colt surplus parts.
My new build is based upon the Army designated marksman rifle with a few changes. I am not a fan of the current run of free floated rail type of hand guards so this is being built on a McKay lower with Geissele SSA trigger etc. Butt stock will be a standard A2. The upper is where I am branching out a bit. Flattop with a White Oak service rifle barrel nested inside a service rifle float tube, A2 style front sight. For the optics, I am going with a LaRue mount and a Leopold Mark AR 6-18x40mm scope. It will look like a standard scoped M16A4 unless you look close – kind of like what we did to street racing cars back in the day.
Now, about the loads I will be shooting out of this. I do not kind myself and think I will be doing much of anything over 300 yards – eyes too old and too much caffeine lodged in my system. While waiting on the barrel to be delivered I have prepped about 1200 rounds of once fired commercial RP brass – I went whole hug and uniformed the primer pocket, hand trimmed (versus using my Dillon power trimmer) hand de-burred and inspected. (It is not bad when you do only 50 a day!)
My question – I want to use my Dillon press and it does not do very well with extruded type of powders. I am new to the whole extreme accuracy thing – So is there any recommendation for a ball powder/ bullet/primer combo for the 100/200/300 yard ranges using the 1/7 White Oak barrel? I already have a box of SMK 77’s that I plan working up a load, but am open to any and all suggestions for other combos. Any ideas?
