Hello Everyone,
Thank you for the opportunity to gain knowledge from this site and the members. I look forward to your guidance in long range precision shooting. I have been working on a long range .243. I purchased a Rem700 CDL 24" barrel with a 9.125 twist, and put a Bobby Hart Accu-block Target stock on it. I then equipped it with a harris bi-pod. I mounted a SWFA Mil-Quad 12X SS Scope, with a 20moa pictanny base and TPS rings. I did not know enough at the time I bought it to put the barrel through any type of break in procedure, just went out and shot it. Continued studying everything I could find on the subject, including everything posted by TiborrasaurusRex, 8541 Tactical, Gunwerks, meccastreisand and others. After the research that I have done, what I found important is to pick a bullet and powder combination and stick with that. So, I realized that I wanted a bullet that has a fairly high BC that would accommodate deer and target shooting. Locally, I could get my hands on the Hornady 105gr match bullets, and the Berger 95gr VLD Hunting bullets. I finally found a powder combination of IMR 4350 with 40.5gr over the 95 gr Berger. Got 1/2" MOA out of that one, but have not found a combination that works that well for the 105gr Hornady's. Still searching on that one, but the 95's are doing well. I got a 12" round AR500 steel from JC Steel, which incredibly is only a 20 minute drive from my 20. Put that out and got first round hits at 290yds, 420yds and 600yds using the ballistics tables from meccastreisand. Found out that Walla Walla is in one of those pesky gravitationally anomalous zones where barometric pressures are over the normal full value and that the gravitational constant for Earth being a little higher here in this area. (this is from meccastreisand, as I would not have come up with this on my own) I had purchased 4 nice scopes, or what I thought were nice scopes. After hours and hours of studying, I pulled all those off my rifles (.222, 22-250. .243 and 7mm) and ordered 4 mil-quad scopes from SWFA, 2 12x and 2 10x. I really like the Mil system for ranging and follow up shots. I still have 2 very new Nikon BDC reticle scopes in the 4-14 power range, one is a Prostaff 5 and the other a Buckmaster, if anyone is interested. I continue to read everything I can about long range precision shooting and realize the more I know, the more I realize the less I know. I have always shot a right handed bolt gun left handed. It has never been an issue in my opinion until last week when I realized that I am right eye dominant. So, I believe I have made the decision to now re-learn the correct way and do it right handed. I see much better from my right eye, but it just feels a bit strange holding a rifle right handed. I will explore that, and hopefully my accuracy will improve. I realize that I have never really learned anything about the fundamentals of marksmanship until recently, so maybe my normal 1 - 1.5 MOA groups will tighten up with more practice on breathing and trigger control. Thank you all, and I look forward to hearing any feedback you may have for me in my new venture. Super enjoy reading this forum and I hear about it a lot from lonewolfusmc. Get out and Shoot!
