Hello everybody,

I'm a graduate student studying nuclear physics, and this is my 'budget' 700P! She's chambered in 300 Winchester Magnum.

Initially I'm not going to do too much to it other than mount a scope, which is on backorder, should be coming in a couple of days. Since I'm not made of cash, I'm initially going with a 10x42mm SWFA SS mil/mil. Here are my Seekings Precision rings and rail. I'm very happy with them, though they need a scope.

(Yep, no bipod yet, so shes sitting on my AR case :p). The only issues I've had so far is the finish (especially on the bolt) isn't great, and its already got wear markes on the bolt from the 20 times I've worked the action. Not too worried, I plan on sending it to a gunsmith in the semi distant future to get it rebarreled with a match barrel, and get the typical workover. Another issue is it doesn't seem to want to extract an empty piece of brass I have laying around, but I haven't gotten to the range to test it with live ammo. I have heard of issues with extractors on these, hopefully its okay.

I've been a gun owner since I was 15, but this is my first big rifle. I mostly shoot pistol, but I am looking to get into rifles. I've been a lurker here for awhile while deciding on what to get, but finally created an account now that finals are done and I have time to put the pieces together. Looking forward to bugging you guys for info!

Okay, couple of questions. Do you know the round count on the rifle? That it has a hard time extracting a spent case is not a problem unless the case came from that rifle. Even then I would measure the case to see if it's grown to long. You state your more a pistol guy so unless your an experienced marksmen I would shoot the barrel out of that rifle before I spent the money on a new barrel. That stock barrel is more accurate than you are at this point. 300 Win Mag. tends to have a shorter barrel life than say a 308 anyway. If you going on a budget I'd say bedding the stock and getting a trigger (Timney or Rifle basix) would be better bang for your buck. Welcome to the addiction.
