Ok, I know what I am about to ask has been asked time and time again. I have spent quite a bit of time on here reading old post and sticky's and pretty much have the answer to my question already but it is nice to have what you think confirmed or if there is somting I didn't think about brought up.

Before I ask my question I'd like to quickly introduce myself since I am new and have been ragged on for not introducing myself on another site, although they did have a spot specifically for that. If you don't care skip the next paragraph.

I live in west texas, love to hunt and shoot. I spend as much time as I can duck hunting and the rest deer or varmint hunting. I have a degree in forest wildlife management, which I am in now way using. Was in the army reserves for 6yrs and spent 1yr in Iraq during that time. Currently work in the oilfield, mostly laying pipeline or somting realated to it and also mechanic for the same company. Well that pretty much sums that up and gets it out of the way. I hope to get to know yall better and hopefully am able to contribute a little bit to this site.

Ok, now my question, not sure if this is the best spot for this post but thought it was the most appropriate area. I am planning on getting a new hunting setup together before deer season, which is quickly approching. Currently the only real deer type rifle I have is a 8mm mauser with a 4x30 bushnell that is at least 26yrs old but it has droped many of deer at ranges up to 450yds with reloaded ammo (no idea how old the rifle itself is). This was my dads gun and I am planning on putting it to pasture. I have shot and owned 30-06, 7mm and a .270. I am also wanting to do some long range shooting (1000 to 1500 yds) just for fun, with the same gun. I would like to be able to shoot deer (or larger game animal) out to 500-600 yards if need be. I am planning on getting a Rem 700 sendero 300RUM and somthing in the price range of Leupold Mark4 6.5-20 ($1500 or so). From what I have read and heard the sendero's are really good rifles and the 300rum has plenty of power and reach. The price of the gun and scope will pretty much be the total of my budget for now, plus the additional stuff like rings and stuff to mount the scope.

So far the only real negatives that I have heard about the 300Rum is the barrel life and some say recoil. The barrel life issue does not concern me overly much because it seems like most say the barrel life is around 1000rds. I figure with the amount of shooting I would do with this gun the barrel should last me long enough. The only other issue that I have seen is some say it is difficult to get good manufactured ammo for this round. Again this does not concern me much because I will be reloading.

If anyone has a suggestions that would meet my needs for around the same budget they would be greatly appreciated. I know the Mark 4 may not be the best scope for my needs as far as hunting but I would like it for long range shooting or a similar type scope unless someone has a better suggestion. I know there are other scopes out there for the similar price range but I keep going back to the mark 4.

I really know very little about good med-long range scopes, this is probably what I am most indicisive about right now and need the most help with. Where I live it is pretty difficult for me to go check out gear in person becuase the closes town with anything bigger than a gas station is an hour away so I am hoping to get some good insight from yall because when I get to town the next time I will be buying a rifle or ordering it over the internet, since we do actually have a ffl in town.

Well that is all I can think of right now, once again I do appologize about asking somthing that I know has been answered many times before but like I said earlier it will make me feel better to confirm what I think or to correct me if I am wrong and help me save some time and money.

Re: New member, new gun, same old questions

Sounds like you answered your own questions. Don't know how an 8mm will do at 1,500 yards though. It will be a little more like artillary.

That 300 has more smack than a 30-06. Not something you can go out and shoot a few boxes with unless you like the punishment.

Or you could put a brake and or a suppressor on it and shoot it with half the punishment...

If you had not said "or larger" I would have said find a remington with the varmint barrel in 243, 7mm-08 or 308. Load Bergers in it and call it good. But with "larger" in mind I would start and stop at the sendero chambered in 7mm remington mag. This is all assuming customs are out of the question.

As for glass, thats very personal. Get what makes you happy. Exposed turrets if your planning to dial. Some type of ranging reticle, not for ranging but wind and elevation holds to be used when needed.

Re: New member, new gun, same old questions

I had an 8mm Mauser years ago, a tack driver. When you stop shooting it, keep plenty of lubricant in the barrel, it seemed to go to rust quickly.

Re: New member, new gun, same old questions

I have looked at the vortex schopes, if I went that way I would like to get the razor hd but that is out of my price range (around 2000 is what I have seen, but willing to buy used but haven't seen very many yet). I have seen some good reviews about the viper pst but some negative reviews as well. Wasn't sure if viper pst line would be as good as the mark 4. Do like the price tag on the viper pst.

I am thinking about the viper pst but not sure. If the viper pst is equal or close to equal to the quality of the leupold then I would definately choose it. If I could find a good used razor hd close to my price range i would definately get it, I like what I have read about it. I have been watching for one but think I have only seen 1 maybe 2. Hopefully there will be more in the near future.

I have also looked at the 7mm mag and 300WM. Actually when I decided to get new rifle was planning on the 300WM, that was my first choice because I have actually held and shot one but then talked myself into the 300RUM. Still on the fence about the 2, only reason I decided on the 300RUM at least for now is for hunting elk (only rarely) but I know 7mm and 300WM is sufficient for this task as well. Kinda decided on the 300RUM because don't know anyone around here who has one (I'm sure somone does but no one I know) and wanted somthing different. Plus the extra power is appealing too but not big deal, I know the 7mm and 300WM are proven and tested and are great round, not that the 300RUM isn't.

300WM is definately still on the table for me, probably won't decide for sure till I actully buy the rifle.

MB198 will definatly do that, want the rifle to stay in good shape while it is put up, may want to break it back out in a few years or to pass on to kids in the future.

Re: New member, new gun, same old questions

Well I was just looking for some 300rum reloading info and came across my post and thought I would tell everyone thanks for there info and suggestions and update yall if you cared.

Got the sendero 300rum and vortex razor hd scope. I have the rifle right now and the scope should be in tommrow, can't wait. Badger ordnance base and IOR rings (ordered from Scott at liberty optics and he was out of the vortex pmr rings, so I settled for the IOR rings). Harris bi-pod and thats it for now. I Might get a new stock later on but I pretty much went overboard on my budget so that might be this time next year before I get that.

Thanks again for the info and help everyone.

Re: New member, new gun, same old questions

Well I finally got my new rig put together and am completely satisfied. Haven't done anything special to it yet, just a stock rifle and scope. I kinda went over my budget, so everything else will probably have to wait till some time next year. The rifle is a rem 700 sendero II chambered in 300rum and topped with a vortex razor hd with the ebr-2b mrad reticle. I got to go shoot it the other day and shot 1/4" 3 round groups at 100 meters. I haven't really got to strech its legs yet. Now I need to get some handloads going, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think right now I am gonna experiment with retumbo and H1000 with 168, 178 and 208 a-max's. Well here are the photos, thanks for all the input.

Jetro, cost about 3400 for everything.

The bipod is on backwards because it fits in the case a lot better and only takes about 30 secs to flip. Just took the rifle out of the case to take a pic and put it right back, so didn't see a need to flip it around but when I shoot I do flip it so i can load it.
