Ok, I have been drawn for a state wide 30 day Oryx hunt. I spent all day Thursday scouting the Bosque Wild Life Refuge and came up with very little sign. Friday spend all day on the back side of the Fite Ranch and found a little more sign, but nothing real encouraging. However, we did see 25 - 30 Oryx on the White Sands property, but nothing would cross the fence.

Does any one have any suggestions or recommendations on where to possibly bag an Oryx?

Thanks,

Re: New Mexico Oryx Hunt Help

I would hunt right by the White Sands line or in White Sands if you have the availability. They cross 54 all the time into McGregor Base Camp.

I have scouted them all over White Sands but wasnt able to draw a tag... Hoping for next year....

Re: New Mexico Oryx Hunt Help

I'm no Oryx expert, but can you hunt north of 380? I have seen, just while driving, numerous animals between Bingham and Carrizozo. Around White Ranch.
Like I said though, not sure where White Sands hunting boundaries are.
Like Stryker said, your chances at more animals seem to be between Orogrande and Alamogordo on US 54. Maybe the Tres Hermanos area off 54.

Hey, good luck, should be fun!!

Re: New Mexico Oryx Hunt Help

I would figure out where and when they are having hunts on Whitesands....then hunt the land bordering the range. I heard nearly as much shooting around the borders of the range as on the range.

That sounds like the back side of the Fite Ranch, that's where I was back by the prop tanks & missles. I'm not sure of the road names, but we passed the props and turned left and went about 1 - 2 miles and that is where we had seen 20 - 30 Oryx on the base property. We really did not see any sign as to where they might be crossing the fence.

Here are some photos, not the best quality just a little fuzzy.

My next trip out would be to take that same road further south.

Thanks

Re: New Mexico Oryx Hunt Help

My father in law is 80 year old disabled vet from yhe Korean war. He applied (with my help) for an Oryx Hunt. Unfortunatly, he needed a "sponser". He got drawn but ca not get on the base without a sponser. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: New Mexico Oryx Hunt Help

Sponser???

Sounds more like you put him in for a <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000">Badge Hunt </span></span>is this correct??

If it is the badge hunt then you might be in a bit of a bind....

PM me Mark and I'll explain to you........
