I have a CZ 550 Varmint Kevlar 22-250 that was acquired for a project piece. At first was thinking 22-250AI but now considering all 22 and 6mm calibers. The current barrel is a 1 in 14 and I'm looking to shoot heavier bullets.

My goal is to have a solid 400-600 yard prairie dog rifle. I understand that cartridge length is going to effect magazine use but I'm not opposed to operating it as a single shot.

Any caliber suggestions?

Unless you are up for rebarreling, I agree that 6mm/250 might be the way to go, although having shot a bunch of prairie dogs myself, .22-250 will work plenty adequately, plus ammo is widely available for it....

If it's for varmint, why not go with the 6.5 Grendel. It would perform fantastic in the 400-600 range. Hell, the Grendel is taking deer out that far.

22BR! Great barrel life, great brass available from Lapua, Lots of bullets to chose from, and very easy to load for and tune the load. Small case makes for a cheaper cartridge to reload in the long run. Holds 20-25% less powder than the 22-250

If you want to shoot heavier bullets you will need to rebarrel. A 243 with the right twist/bullet combo will get you to 1k with no problem. You can also chamber in 22-250AI with 75-80 grain bullets and a 7.5-8 twist barrel to get you out there as well. And thats just two choices off the top of my head

I guess it would all depend on what amount of time you want to spend making ammo
