Best ammo? Depends...Each rifle is different. I have two 40x rimfires. One likes Eley black box and the other likes Remington subsonics![the horror, the horror]
Get a few boxes of various ammo and give them a try. If nothing else you will have fun trying!

Mine loves the higher end stuff. I shoot exclusively RWS R50 now but it also shoots Eley Match and Federal GM Ultra Match exceptionally well. There really isn't a "bad" match grade ammo out there for it but there are some that stand out.

If it's a 40xb it can't be made in 1955. the 700 action on which the b was made, didn't
get made till the 1960's. A US marked wouldn't have a factory box either. It would have a CMP book though.

I stand. Corrected looks like it was made in the early 60's has new style bolt and 40x on the side us up top then at the end of the serial number has a b heavy barrel is floated as Checked with a dollar bill all the way back too the action

Glad to hear you got a nice rifle, they are fun to shoot.

I have quite a few 40-X and 40-XB rifles, they all shoot well with Wolf Match or Match Extra and the SK Jagd equivalents, they really like RWS R-50 and my 40-XR is lights out with Lapua Master L. I have not had good luck with Eley in my 40-X's, my 37 doesn't like Eley either.
