I'm looking at putting together a new rig for doing some tactical and club shooting competitions this next year and would appreciate your comments. Here is where I am at.

1. Need to be able to shoot a mile but no further on this rig.

2. Looking at maybe a DTA SRS, AI AW or AI AX, or maybe a Tubb Spectacular if I can find one. What do you think ?

3. What caliber for tactical competition ? I'm not looking at national caliber stuff(I'm an old guy) and won't be doing any shooting for a service.Would 6XC in a Tubb Spectacular do the job even out to a mile ? An SRS or AI in .300 Win or do I need to go to .338 LM for the distance ?

Thanx in advance guys

Re: New rig for competive tactical shooting

Ahhhhh, yeah you're gonna need at least a .338 for shooting over 1760 yards. For competition the Tubb Spec in 6XC or a GAP/Surgeon or any custom for that matter chambered in .243,.260, or .308 will do the trick. AI's are great rifles too but the chassis doesn't fit me like a Manners or MCM.

Re: New rig for competive tactical shooting

One thing to consider is that most match directors will only allow a 300 WM as the largest caliber. Using proper bullets, the 300WM will do mile shots easily, but so will the 243's, 260's, and 7 WSM's.

Re: New rig for competive tactical shooting

I'd suggest building a match rifle and an ELR rifle separately. Any rifle capable of doing 1 mile comfortably (338LM) will be overkill for matches. By building a jack of all trades you'll have a compromised situation. However, the 7 SAUM or WSM would probably be my choice if you want one gun to do it all.
