Well... in fact, it's worse than what you think: I had to pay lots of things to get this one... a S&B cost for me about $4800. And I earn about $550 per month. Do the maths and tell me how much time have I been saving to be able to buy this.
A scope is a scope, no matter how much money you want to spend on it.
The only tactical scopes I can buy in my country:
Monarch X, Shilba (china crap), Horus Vision Raptor and a bushnell with rangefinder on it (about $6000).
I decided the S&B was a good thing to put my money into. I think I will enjoy it. I don't want to be fighting against a $80 chinese scope. I don't want to buy a Monarch X for $2300. And I don't want to pay $2300 for a Raptor when I don't even know if I can get a warranty if it fails... and even if I can get the warranty this will cost probably another $1000 or so. I prefer to buy something I know it's the best proven scope and I know I will enjoy and trust probably for many many years, if not for life.
And I know how to zero a scope, just happens that here people use hunting scopes and they don't mind how much elevation is used to get to 300 yards. People here often zero at 50 or 100 yards and do hunting up to 300 yards. Because of this, I'm used to zero a scope to that distances put the caps on the knobs and forget about those knobs until replacing the scope. And we do this without considering how much elevation or windage we have left because there's no need for that.
Now that I'm getting into long range shooting, I need to know how to zero a scope keeping all the other variables in mind.
I'm sorry if this bothers you. You will often find people who has better stuff than yours... I don't comment on my shooting mates' expensive rifles... I enjoy shooting with them as we enjoy shooting my old mauser carbine without optics on it.
I hope you can buy your SB someday. Meanwhile, if you ever get to travel here, you're welcome to shoot with mine
as everybody else.
