I'd like to ask you guys to help me refresh my mind in the things I need to watch for with a new shooter at the range. I know the main rules. ie no muzzle swipes/gun is always loaded/never aim a gun at anything your not willing to destory and so forth. The young man is a friend of mine son and wants to go and shoot with me at the range he has shoot weapons before but not at a range just out in the woods and such. Just wanting to make sure we are both safe as will as others.

Call your local 4-H extension office and enroll him in the shooting sports program and be his mentor. (With his parents permission of course, or get them involved too!)

I just completed the leadership training for the rifle portion of the program and it is very well laid out.

Explain range commands - hot , cold , make safe , cease fire . No handling weapons when anyone is forward of the firing line . Stay behind him to prevent him turning while on the firing line . Hopefully he'll have fun and learn some more about shooting but very important to keep him and others safe . Hope you both have a lot of fun !
