New to long range precision shooting. I come from a background ARs but this is my first shot at a bolt gun designed for long range.
Gun is a Howa HCR. I mounted and bedded a 20 moa base on the rifle. I purchase a scope from a gentleman across the country which is an Athlon Ares BTR. It came with low rings on it. When I mount this scope on my rifle, it clears everything (no contact) but not by much. I've read that mounting lower is good for various reasons...but part of me feels a scope with 50mm objective should be mounted in medium rings despite the fact that the low rings technically are working. The rings he supplied are high quality Ken Farrel steel rings and I'm reluctant to just trade them away but will do what I need to. Any thoughts?

As long as you're comfortable and it's easy to get in position behind the scope the rings are fine.
I'm definitely fine as it is. The only possible issue is I can't mount my scope any farther back without the Objective hitting the scope base. Being a new shooter I may feel compelled to adjust once I've got more time behind the rifle. Some guys have their scope mounted farther back and I'm maxed out on that adjustment.

Is that sunshade really not touching??

If it is, you will case issues with your scope tube and possible erector.

Most importantly you should not have to climb over your rifle to have a nice easy sight picture.

It actually is not touching. The top of handguard is cut out and it is sitting in there so it looks in the picture like it's making contact but actually never get closer than 1/4" to the barrel at any point

If you can get behind the gun in all positions — and STAY straight to manage recoil ~ no worries..

Remember gun fit is everything, a scope to far foward or backwards is a deal braker for good fundamentals

That probably won't flex enough to make contact under recoil which is good, but what would irk me personally with that setup would be that I could never fit caps or even a bikini over the objective without a little surgery on them. Medium or higher (1.2" +) would have been a bit more forgiving overall.

If you like it, run it!
