hello:
I could tell you how nice it shoots, or the groups it prints
BUT NO
I will show you the only sniper rifle I have, that I can place in one of my library´s shelves. Even with the big SN3 the rifle is so compact and beautiful that I can´t avoid leaving it there close to me so i can take a look, every once in a while.
If I stow in in the gun safe I cant see it !!!

This one is the only SSG08 outside from COBRA with the dark camouflage Steyr did for them. A unique rifle that will be used for shooting , and not for display.

I hope you like it.

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

MY friend I am too old to start bullshitting myself into politically correct terms. I am a sniper and this is MY SNIPER RIFLE.
If you shoot competitively in FT/R then it will be your precision rifle.

It is as simple as that (on my humble opinion)

Yes as do alot of people but cybersniper has earned the "sniper" rating so when he speaks sniper rifle it is because it will be used in accordance with that "title".

Looking good Cyber

Sorry for the insult!I did not know your profession!
I just do not like it when others call my rifle a sniper rifle or tell me suppressors and machineguns are illegal and I have no resason to own them when they are registered legally.

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

I will go next week to shoot it at max range in Southern Spain. There are not many 1000+ ranges in here...

The rifle has been shooting consistently (all groups) under 3/4 MOA with all ammo: M80, Norma 168gr DL and LAPUA Lock base 170gr. The trigger came with COBRA adjustments which are too hard for me, and I am still learning to get the rifle adjusted for me. Thats what happens when you have to many adjustments to tinker with.

Also all the shots where NOT SHOT for groups BUT to chonographing my issue ammo and to get the rifle barrel "run-in". Very high position for the chrono and cleaning after every shot.

Even on those conditions, all the groups went around 1/2 and 3/4 MOA, most on the 13mm side.

As soon as the barrel is weared a little and all the shots are not oiled bore shots, the pressures will estabilize and it will surely print smaller groups. The first unit I tested in Austria was capable of bechrest quality groups and my rifle shows a very promising future.

I will tell you next week.

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

I am no expert on the COBRA, I know them because we have trained toghether on some SF reunions and they are nice people. Austrians are nice guys in general.

The EKO Cobra (Einsatzkommando Cobra in Austrian) is the most important Counter-Terrorism unit of the Austrian Federal Police. It has a batallion size and thay are considered to be among the best trained Counter-Terrorist units in the world. They carry all the regular SWAT and SF skills but are specially versed in climbing the Austrian mountains.

I can tell you that in most CT competitions COBRA is always one of the top teams on par with GSG9 and SAS.

As i did not know much about thier history I WIKIED them and this is it:

In 1975, EKO Cobra was involved in trying to end the OPEC siege led by Carlos (the Jackal),hostage rescue in Karlau prison in Graz 1996. Although it has never partaken in the kind of hostage rescues that GIGN, GIS, GSG 9 and the SAS have, the EKO Cobra is so far the only Counter-Terrorism unit that ended a hijacking while the plane was still in the air: On October 17, 1996, 4 Cobra officers were on board an Aeroflot Tupolev 154 escorting deported prisoners to Lagos when a Nigerian threatened the cockpit crew with a knife and demanded a diversion to Germany or South Africa. The team overcame the man and handed him to the authorities after landing. The officers received a decoration by Russian President Putin.

In 2002 the Federal Ministry of Interior changed the name from GEK (Gendarmerieeinsatzkommando) to EKO Cobra (Einsatzkommando Cobra). Cobra was the internal code name for this Special Operations unit, influenced by the TV-Show Mission: Impossible (German: Cobra, übernehmen Sie!) and now it became part of the official name, which is not part of the Police. It is directly subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Interior.

Pretty impressive

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

I have a couple of Steyr SSG's that I put into McMillan Stocks and can attest to Steyr accuracy. The BIG issue in the US is getting support for spare parts...quite frankly they just plain suck. I ordered a replacement trigger guard in August 2008 and recieved it in March of 2009..very poor customer service...
This rifle sells for in excess of $5000. One could build a GAP for a lot less than that.

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

My first post.

I shot a 3 day Tactical Precision Rifle class last month. My PIIK performed great and the accuracy was better than I could shoot. As with any training or class I was able to work out some gear issues.

1-the PIIK is VERY accurate, some of the other guys said they wanted my barrel on their "Remington" custom guns.

2-The stock ergonomics were great for me but personally I wish it was made from a different material. It is a 40 year old design and was "Space age" stuff in 1969.

3-since the PIIK is about 9 lbs and has a somewhat hard butt plate I had to make a field expedient butt pad (towel/100MPH tape) before completing the 400-600 round class.

4- we shot out to 886 YDS and the 20" barrel worked out great. I did not notice any issues out to this range. Since I could not shoot past this range I do not know if the accuracy from the 20" barrel would suffer. I did really like how the short barrel made it easy to shoot from "other than prone" positions. The light weight (9 lbs) was helpful in these positions as well.

5- I wish the mags were not rotary. Anyone who has owned a 10/22 understands why. For a Police call out I think the gun/mag combo will work out great (as it has for 40 years). for more demanding military use I would prefer the Steyr SBS mags for strength and reliability.

"After shooting the PIIK in the class I decided to move to a SSG 08. I am picking up my sample SSG 08 in about a week. I went with the 23.6" barrel simply for the added velocity and due to the fact that it is closer to the specs of the vast amount of 24" test gun data available. To be honest it was a coin toss between the 20" and 23.6".

I should be able to break the gun in in the next few weeks and will give a range report.

Here is a reply I received from Ed who said I could post his PM reply to me:
Can you believe that I only measured the barrel after more than 1000 rounds and was surprised to see that it was actually ONLY 20" inches long?
It was doing so well that I never bothered to do so.
I have shot VERY well at the FT/R World Championships at Bisley and it surely performs past 800. Actually I shot better at 1000yards than at 800. Really I think that I shot the same but the rest of the shooters I shot against shot better at 800 and 900.
The best ammo for Long Range is the lapua 170 lock base (around 808ms) and the most accurate Fed Gold medal 168gr at (760ms) if my memory does not fail.
The problem is that 168gr sierras doe not shoot part 900 yards of so.
If you need any more help let me know.
Steyr´s 20 inches barrel are simply AWESOME but wait to see the new 27" incher.........
Eduardo"

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

Shot my SSG 08 for the first time today. It is more accurate than I am. My first 3 shot group was a one hole sub 1/2 moa at 100 yds low and right. I made my adjustments and the gun was dead on all day. We shot barricaded targets through all types of glass residential, commercial, plate, tempered, auto (windshields and side windows), car doors, cinder block (filled and unfilled), drywall, wood, solid core doors, concrete slab etc.
I shot 168 gr BTHP. The only issue I had was the commercial glass when at a 45 degree angle, concrete slab, and the concrete filled cinder block.

What a great rifle! the only things I would change would be the grip, the location of the sling swivels.

We shot at 50-100 yds today due to the nature of the class but I am looking forward to taking it out to 600-1000 yds.

Recoil felt equivalent to an M4 with no change in sight picture between shots.

Re: New STEYR SSG08 COBRA scoop

I have just seen the new 27incher in person and its fantastic:)) very sturdy indeed, well built, very smooth action and aesthetically very pleasant. the bipod is a smaller version of the HS50. Now i am lost as to which one to go for 308 or 338. In any case my question is another, do you guys know if the barrel is a pressfit like the old SSG or is this threaded? I might be tempted later to have a barrel change to a 6.5mmm

Good luck wearing the barrel... even a little. Those Chrome-lined SSG barrels are hard as woodpecker lips! I've owned 3 SSG's but none were an 08. My favorite was called a PIII MATCH. I've never seen another. It had an HS Precision stock and the rail for that big rear peep-sight they put on the "Match" SSG's.

Great rifles! Enjoy!
