Hey bigperm. If I can pry a little, was there a big reason you wanted to jump headlong into the open class versus production or tactical? The reason I ask is because I too am new to PRS. Been shooting LR police and military and across the course matches but only got bitten by the bug of PRS this year. I am coming from your standpoint and noticed a few guys mention discounts and such. If you join PRS in your region it's like $45 or so for the year, and you will get discounts from several manufacturers for guns that fit into production class which currently caps at $3000 for the rifle and another $2500 for optics. So you can get a turn key gun from MPA for between $2350 - $2750 (with your PRS discount) or GA precision has a match gun for production class (Not sure about any discounts there). Do not make the mistake I did and try and go the Savage 110 Elite precision. Couldn't ever get mine to extract reliably even with working on it. Bergara makes a match comp rifle as well that fits into production class. Any production class gun will place you into a slightly smaller group within your prs region and I personally think it's a bit more fun. Also production class includes a ton of different calibers as well. Go for something with low recoil so you can master the fine art of seeing your shots to make corrections. Since these are not team matches you are not normally supposed to get correction calls. If you tell everybody you are new though, just about every shooter will help you with wind calls and corrections. I have even seen the RO hook you up if you are a newbie. Plus the beauty of a production class is they typically have good actions that can be upgraded later on when you wanna run with the big dogs (Open class). And the tactical class is a great way to save money (SOMETIMES) as long as you are good with shooting only a .308 or .223. Ok this got way long. My quick suggestion, get your membership and use your discount to by an MPA production gun on a Matrix or BA chassis and you will be set for a good while. Also you can add all the cool things (send it's, bipods, spigot mounts, brakes, tuners etc and you will stay in production class. none of those things count against you and they can all be transferred to a new rifle later on. For accessories it's buy once cry once. Best of luck and if you come to the atlantic region give us a shout. We love to see new shooters every match. I'm not gonna say a thing about optics....lol. Just remember it's $2500 cap.
