my dad gave me his marlin 22lr lever action that he bought when he was 14 which is actually super cool - but I also just inherited this from a friend that passed that he apparently had some pretty good fun with based on swapping the magpul stock and the green mountain barrel - I dont know a lot about these otherwise - I zero 5.56 typically at 50 for 200.....what should I be zeroing this at - 100yards I presume? Is there an advantage to this barrel does it carry more velocity or change trajectory?

Thanks for the tips n tricks in advance fellas

A great way to remember your friend. The looks like a 22 LR like your Dad’s old Marlin. From the picture it looks like a 10/22 action. Whatever range you zeroed your Marlin should work for this rifle. most people choose either 50 or 25 yards for this caliber. It is very capable at 200 yards for target shooting and you can push it even further. For small game hunting, most people would keep it 100 yards or less.

the advantage of the barrel is accuracy. It has little influence on the effective range, except being able to hit small targets further down range.

Looks like your friend had a Winter squirrel gun. I bet he had a suppressor on it as well judging by the bare threads. You should get a muzzle thread protector for it. Or a suppressor. 🤠

I prefer a 25 yard zero but that's just me. Try to find some subsonic ammo. The more expensive, the better. ;) Then go out and see what it can do.

The green mountain barrel will neither increase velocity, nor change the trajectory of the 22lr cartridge- not to any really meaningful way anyway. However it may be a higher quality barrel, holding tighter groups than a factory barrel.

It‘s effective range will be entirely dependent upon your goals, as will the appropriate zero. I use a 50 yard zero on my 22lr for 2 reasons. One is that is the length of the indoor range that I have available for zeroing. The other is that is the distance of the kyl target at the local 22 match- and represents the min distance shot at that event. I prefer not to have to dial on that target.

My 22 is “effective” on steel targets out to at least 250 yards, hitting them when the target is sufficiently large and the wind sufficiently light. I would not, however, expect a drt effect on an elk at that distance. A good 10/22 barrel will hold sub-moa accuracy out to at least 50 yards with match quality ammunition- wind and shooter not withstanding- and perhaps beyond. The ability to hit a live target will far outstrip the ability to effect a kill-shot on all but the smallest of game (squirrels, rabbits, etc) at most distances. What are your goals?

thanks men - yes he had a can on it, can't have one here in NY so I have a thread protector on it. I guess tight groups at 100yd would be the goal - just wasnt sure if it was a tough feat for this, or if I was selling it short and capable of more - thanks!

I have my 10/22 in the Magpul Hunter and do like that combo. I have the Green Mountain barrel and it is very accurate. I've upgraded the bolt, mag release to Kidd after markets and have no problems. The scope on there now is a Cabela's 4-16 FFP in MOA -not crazy about the MOA but it works ok.

That is a nice looking Marlin 56 that you have. One thing to watch with them is for light firing pin strikes. The hammer spring may need to be replaced to fix this. It is getting hard to find replacements.

The model 56 is part of Marlin's Levermatic series. They also made a model 57 which was a tube fed version of the model 56, a model 57M which was a tube fed 22 magnum, and 2 model 62's. One was a 30 carbine and the other was a 256 win mag.
