Will post pics tomorrow, but any input would be appreciated.
I picked up a Unfired Remmington 5R with a Leupold 8.5-25x50mm LR. I was looking at another rifle, but this one seemed to be a good deal.
I don't have a reloader set up yet, so whats a good ammo to start with?
I would like to add a BO 20moa rail, so what height rings will I need if I go with to mount either a 50mm or 56mm Nightforce?
Also whats the going rate for a new 5R? In case my wife catches me with it and I need to prove to here that "I had to do it"

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

Also there was another one that was used. Leupold bases, spots of light rust that would probably clean up, but overall pretty nice. It was $935, I think. The shop was in seattle (eastside) if anyone is interested. BTW the shop had been known to negotiate. So ymmv.

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

Paid 1200 for mine thats with tax included. Looks just like yours in the pic but have a Night Force 3.5x15x50 NXS on mine with 20moa bases. Shoots Federal gold Match 168gr and 175gr the best of all the ammos I've tried so far.

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

I snaged mine new off Gunbroker last year for $980 shipped. I have a NXS 5.5x22/55mm on it. The base I used is a Seekins 20 MOA and it was suggested I use the Seekins "high" rings. I have about .13" between the barrel and scope. If you were to go with the 50mm optic you could probibly use the "medium high" rings. With the rings I have, the bikini cover barely slides on clearing the top of the barrel. Congratulations. Good rifle.

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

Thanks, I feel alittle better about the deal I got. I was just about ready to buy a scope for one of my other rifles, and since this one was NEW. I convinced myself that I needed to subtract the cost of the scope from the price of the rifle. Then once I did that the price of the rifle was too good to pass up. Funny how you can justify things when you want to.
Leupold VX-3 8.5-25x50mm LR with the Varmint Hunters Reticle. Cost at MIDWAY was about $1,100

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

Paid about a grand for mine from Sportsman's Finest in Austin, TX.

I run a Nightforce 20 MOA base with 1" Nightforce rings holding a NXS 5.5-22x56mm.

Mine loves Blackhills Match 175 gr. with 640 rounds down the tube.

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

I just picked up a brand new one off of GB for just under $1100. I put the same Leupold scope you mentioned (bought off a member here used)with 20 MOA rail and Burris medium rings. I only have about 20 rounds through it, and half of those were spent zeroing it in, but I have to say I am very happy with what I have seen so far. Hoping to get out for another range session soon.

Re: New to me Remmy 5R

I tried a box of 168gr TAP ammo. Only thing I could find today, so with the first ammo she is showing promise.

I tried a 5 shot group here but I pulled one when I phone rang as I was squeezing the trigger.
