I just got a lee press reloading kit i intend on reloading my 300 ultra mag my 270 win and my 204 ruger and was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some recipies to get me started in the right direction my goal with the 300 rum is to reach 1000 yd. it is a remmy and i understand that i will need to do some of my own r & d but some place to start that might help me save a little cash would be great. I would like to take the 270 win out to about 750 yd it is a tika t3 my 204 is my varmit gun i have no idea of the range abilities of this remmy but i am hoping 400 to 500 so any in put would be great.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

You need to consult your manual. You will get like 10 opinions here, all different loads, and that will just confuse you; it would definitely confuse me. However, I plugged in the .300 RUM in my ballistics calculator, and using factory Federal .308 200 gr Nosler Partition, your muzzle velocity is 3070 fps, and that will get you out to 1000 yds with 286 inches of drop, or 27.25 MOA, and will be at 1411 fps. This is at zero altitude and standard conditions.

Good advice there, the ballistics programs are a really good way to start. Just be careful and work the load up, don't start off with somebody else's load.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

Buy the latest Lyman's Centerfire Handloading Manual and read everything except the caliber specific data. Then read the safety section again.

You'll have a basis for a good start.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

this is the load I use on 300rum in a 700P
90 gr. Retumbo
Federal 215 primer
Remington brass
208 A MAX

this is not a super hot load in my rifle and it chrono's at around 3000fps. You will find the rum is hard on brass and barrel if pushed hard all the time. I have close to 700 rounds through mine and it is getting close to needing a barrel.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

It is an absolute must at the beginning that you own, and read, a reloading manual. I have little use for mine now as I seldom am loading something I haven't loaded before, but when you're new, you NEED a manual. Get one, read it, and come back with any questions you have about setting up your equipment/dies.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

Get the Lyman like Victor suggested, because it is a good entry level explanatory manual. Then get the Sierra and Hornady manuals bc they have a very wide variety of bullets too choose from; I'm sure you will find a good bullet to use in these manuals. The software I am playing with is called Ballistic Field Tactical Edition v 2.0.1 for the iphone/ipod touch. I also have the Knight's Armament software, KAC Bullet Flight Level 2 v 3.0.0. Of the 2, I like the Ballistic better because it is more comprehensive. I am using it more for educational purposes than actual use right now.

With the 180 gr Swift Scirocco, there are a couple of factory loads from Remington. I am using factory loads to provide you with data bc I don't have any experience with the RUM and I don't have the Swift manual, so I couldn't tell you accurate velocities. The factory Remington 300 RUM180 gr Premier Scirocco Bonded PL2 has a BC of 0.507, and a muzzle velocity of 2980 fps. At standard atmosphere and no wind, at 1000 yards you are looking at 288 inches of drop or 27.5 MOA, 1463 fps and 856 ft-lbs of energy. Time in flight is 1.44 seconds. From this data and the previous data I provided above, it looks like you need roughly 3000 fps to be where you want to be at 1000 yards. So pick a load that gets you to at least 3000 and you should be good to start.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

thanks alot to everyone for your help so far i will get the lyman manual and get back to you with ? cause i am sure i will have some when it comes time to set it up.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

DO NOT try to load any cartridges until you have read a reloading manual! You could easily damage damage or ruin your rifle and injure yourself. My other piece of advise is not to take anyone's load off the internet without making sure that the load is within the limits of a printed manual.

Good luck

Re: new to reloading got a few?

I shoot 28.5varget with 39 sierra blitzkings w/rem7.5 primers this combo has shot 1/2moa with 4 different rifles so it should be a good one. start with 28gr and go up in .5gr increments till you find a happy point. mine shoots well to about 650 but has almost no killing power on anything past 500yds.

hope this helps.

Re: new to reloading got a few?

Just a couple of things.
First there are several powders that have the same number BUT are from different manufactures. THE DATA FOR THEM IS NOT INTERCHANGABLE.
Second get at least 1 manual from either an equipment manufactor or a powder maker. Lee makes a good one and it should have been in the reloading kit you bought.
