I'm throwing around the idea of getting a new bolt action 22lr for volume plinking out to a few hundred yards. I've had various semi auto 22's all of my life but I haven't had any type of precision oriented 22's. From looking around on youtube and forums, the tikka t1x, cz 455, 457 pro varming and ruger precision rimfire have caught my attention. The one I have looked at the most is the cz 457 pro varmint but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. Should I hold out and try to find the 457 or start looking more at the tikka? All help is appreciated.

I love mine but I changed it a little bit. But a Heck of a shooter. Started life as 457 Varmint.

That looks awesome. What chassis is that? What kind of groups have you seen from it?
It is a CZ Chassies, I got a really good deal on since the guy did not like it and put a stock on his precision varmint. This is a 5 shot 50 yd group and at 100 yds its around 1". Im very happy with it to say the least

I have a CZ 455 Varmint and a Tikka T1X, both are great guns. I would give the accuracy edge to the T1X. The CZ 457 pro varmint is the same barrel and action as the 457 varmint. Just the stock is different. Get the one you can find.

If I were buying a new rim fire, I’d grab a 457 MTR. The barrel chambering is match vs the standard chambering in the VPT. Brotherhood arms had the 457 MTR VPT and chassis in stock last week. Give them a check! They support the hide.

I have the 457 and like it. I looked at the Rugar and the reviews and comments on barrel quality scared me off from that/ I like Tikka but the plastic sock was a deal breaker. I don't think you can go wrong with the CZ in this price point.. I would wait for one to show up. Maybe get on a back order list with your LGS.. JMHO.

I was in the same situation just a few weeks ago.

For me, the QC at Ruger took them out of the running - that left the CZ 457 Pro Varmint & the Tikka T1X.

As others have said - get the one that has the features you are looking for.

For me, after a bunch of online homework, the Tikka won the race. The short lift and pull of the bolt was one thing I liked about the Tikka. The great, adjustable factory trigger was another. It also appeared the out of the box accuracy was favoring the Tikka in reports I read.

On a personal note - I liked the fact that the factory Tikka magazine is a 10 rounder instead of the 5 rounder of the CZ, and the 10 round CZ looks too long & curved to my eyes.

The aftermarket support for both is fantastic - so that is a wash.

I took my new T1X to the range for the first time today - and I'm very happy with the results. With a less than great scope thrown on it until my new rings are here - and only about 50 rounds of Federal Automatch down the barrel to get things sighted in, it put 5 rounds of Wolf target ammo into .5" at 50 yards. While not record setting, it shows it has potential. (y)

Have fun,
Bob S.

My experience for bolt .22's is mainly CZ. I'm biased but they're generally better than most rifles in this price point, may get an awesome shooter or barely moa, these aren't Anschutz. Good news is they can all be made into killers but that would depend on budget and desire. As for the mags the 10 rounders are fine length wise (don't get in the way) even with the 3 round extenders. Any way, you should be happy with either Tikka or CZ.

Where do you call home? My LGS has a CZ 457 Pro Varmint on the shelf. PM if you want more information

I 2nd this. I have a 455 and 457 At 1 and recently shot a MTR. The MTR chambering cam be incredibly accurate if you spend the time testing ammo and finding what it likes. In general that is key for any but I noticed more consistency shot to to shot with MTR. Its more $ so any 457 (heavy barrel model) is top notch but MTR has a slight edge.

My CZ MTR came in last week and I've had a little time behind it. I tried a few different rounds (SK rifle match, wolf match and match extra, cci green tag). I had the best groups from the sk followed by wolf match. The wolf match extra had decent groups but about half of the rounds were very tight to chamber.

I've got a 457 AT ONE and a 20" T1X in the cheap plastic stock. Using CCI Std Vel and swapping the same scope back and for the my personal Tikka outshoots my 457 by a bit.

The AT ONE that CZ got ahold of from Boyds is pretty nice, and the trigger adjusted nicer than the Tikka as well but the Tikka shoots lights out for me.

Your results may vary.

I love my CZ 455 and it seems to like most ammo. I will say my Ruger Precision Rimfire shoots a little better. I cannot leave my stuff alone so I dropped in a Shaw barrel and the Timney trigger only because they were at a killer price last year at NRAAM. I like the adjustability of the Ruger. I would add that the aftermarket for the CZ has exploded and companies like Area 419 are making it much easier to mount scopes and other things on them (CZ).

I made my first attempt at sponge camo last night on my 457. I think overall it came out pretty good. I went a little heavy on the clear coat and it resulted in a frosty look. I haven't decided if I will strip it off and try again or leave it alone for a while

I think you would be happy with either the Tikka or CZ. I just never really liked the Ruger for what it is. I love my T1x (in a MDT ACC for a trainer) but I also shoot all Tikka, so buying a CZ for me would make no sense.
