Hey guys. I am having a 338 lapua built on a Stiller action,Shilen 28" bbl, Mcmillan a-5 stock......for long range hunting and busting steel. I have not a clue which optic I should put on the gun. I don't care to spend the money, but I was hoping to get something good for around 1400 or so. any suggestions? also what power? thanks!

For around that you could get a 5-20x50 SWFA SS HD they are realtively solid scopes personally I just got a 5-20x50 Vortex Razor HD and love it but they tend to run around 1900 I think. You defintiely want something with a decent amount of internal travel and both of those offerings give you 30 Mils of internal travel which when coupled with a 20-30 MOA base on your .338 should get you quite far out.

$1400, you can get into some used premium glass, or top midrange glass. Look through the hide optics sale section. You can find decent glass for a good price, as folks sell on their way up. Most likely Nightforce, Leupold, Steiner or maybe a Razor. Just look through the various manufactures warranty statements. Vortex, Leupold, NF have transferable warranties, others may as well, but I dont know.

In the midrange glass, I have the Weaver 3-15x50 EDMR. I was going to replace it but to get all of the same features in premium glass I would have to step up to $2.5-3k. The image quality is darn good and resolution is crisp, I really cant justify replacing it for the type of shooting I do(same hunting and steel). Maybe if I start competing and win some certificates/vouchers I will have a reason.

I'd go somewhere in the 20x to 25x neighborhood at that price point. A used 22x NXS Nightforce, a new SWFA SS, even a new or used Mark 4 8.5-25X Leupold. There are others, but these ones have lots of internal elevation.

What you spend should'nt have anything to do with what power scope you get. Big money dosn't always mean quality optics and little money dosn't always mean junk. Find a place you can lay your hands on 'em.....you may find a surprise or two.

okie

I started with a Leupold LR/T 6.5-20 for less that 1400. I absolutely love it. I upgraded to a Nightforce for a considerable amount more and have been completely sold. But within your budget I would definitely recommend Leupold. If you want to go up higher get the Nightforce NXS.
