New to the Hide - Started a 700 Build

Well I took the plunge and started a LR Tactical build. I want to end up with a 600-800 yard tactical gun that I can also hunt with. I'm going to piece it together as I go. The plan is to eventually start reloading for it as well, but that'll be in the future.

I got the last Rem SPS Varmint from Dick's in .308 in the state of Texas. Got it at a nice discount because they were already clearanced out and the scope and rings were messed up so they took an addl 10% off.

Next steps are base and rings, then optics, then a replacement stock.

Yea, no real question there. I do have a stock question that I posted on the general equip forum about the difference between the HS Precision PSS take-offs vs a B&C Light Tac because those are the 2 stocks that I have narrowed it down to so far.

Other than that, I'm still deciding on optics. Fixed 10x or variable, brand, reticle etc... Looking at the Falcon Menace and SS in fixed 10x and the Falcons in Variable 4-14 and 5-25. Most of that stuff is going to come down to available finances and getting my hands on the different options.

From what it looks like the "Light Tac" has a wider "target style" fore end and a thumb hook on the butt end.

I have a PSS stock and they are a good for a variety of shooting positions. Personally I don't NEED a thumb hook and don't like the "target style" fore ends.

Easy choice for me.

Agreed. I prefer a PSS-style stock for all around applications, not some big tacticool job.

Does the Light Tac really have that wide of a fore end? It looks only slightly wider in the pictures. I've been considering it for my SPS-V as well, and wish a local shop carried them.

However, the HS certainly has the long term reputation, whereas the B&C is a new model, and I'm thus wary. Although I always want to try the "new and improved," I usually kick myself later for not getting the "tried and true."

I don't think it's that much wider but it it more flat and not rounded. Great if you shoot from a bench or something but I like a rounded front end.

My factory Rem700 HS synthetic has suited me very well. Comes aluminum bedded and pillars. Easy to find in the for sale section by guys upgrading to other stuff. You should be able to find one for $100 in great shape and it will serve you well. I dura coated mine and it's working out great.
