I would start with a data book. Start tracking rounds, maintaince, and performance. Make sure you track cold bore shots after cleanings and come up with a procedure. Most keep the guns fouled and clean when performance degrade.

Next you should probably test different ammo out. Test shooting though glass and different mediums.

Good luck.

Binos, rain gear, hydration, snacks, databook and note/sketch material, range finder, and ammo are a good start. If you have room add some blind making material for both a urban/rural hide, and NVG if you have it.

Re: new to this long range operator thing

Have you been to any formal training program for your job??

But think when you get a CALL OUT you will more than likely sit or go prone or some awkward position for a long time.So bring the necessary things that will keep you cofratable. And bring duct tape so you can tape the lights off in a urban hide. You don't want to be in the living room of some ones house and they come in and trun the light on as a habbit. Most of the time the homes are clear but every once awhile they let the occupants stay. And that brings me to don't let the occupants have cameras ether nothing better than a flash going off behind you.{this has happened on a number of locations}.

But have your DEPT send to some sort of training school for your profession.

And as far as making your job enjoyable well IT's NOT period. You will have long hours behind the trigger only to not fire a shot so fatigue will be your enemy most likely not the guy in the crosshairs. But I would definitely keep fit and practice shooting after you run and your hart rate is up. But as I am sure with your DEPT's and most Dept regulations practice the shot you might have to take{I.E. the NOSE} and visit the coroner to or examiner that performs autopsy's they can tell you where the best shot placement is for ending the threat precisely.
And have I mentioned get to some formal and professional training.

Just some off the head thoughts.

Deputy B,

if you're anywhere near McAlester, drop me a line and I'll take you out and let you try some gear out... then you can start deciding what you need, what you want, and what you'd like to have...
