This is my new TRG, got the S&B PMII 3-12x50 mounted this weekend:

I'm happy with the purchase and the choice of the 20" barrel. The quality of the rifle is evident. I don't like how the Harris bipod fits (feels sloppy) and I realize the Sako bipod is over priced. However, I'm wondering if the Sako bipod is a worthwhile purchase. It looks like a good bipod and I'm wondering how sturdy it is and how it functions in general.

Originally, I thought I would pass on the Sako brake, but have since decided it would be a good buy as it will be easy to remove and install for field/range use.

I'll also likely change the stock as well (although there aren't many options). I'm on the wait list for this folding stock option: KRG folder

My question is more specific to the bipod, any other suggestions will be appreciated..

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

I have shot both on my TRG and I use the TRG bipod. I was a Harris user for 15 years or so untill I picked up the TRG bipod. At first it was hard to get use to and after 1 or 2 trips to the range I had it. I still use the Harris on other rifles and it does work, proably better than the TRG bipod for shooting groups. I have even gone back and forth w/ the TRG just to make sure I kiled the TRG bipod and the end result is I do. At the range shooting groups / load development or what ever it leaves a little on the table but not much. It (TRG bipod) does slip a bit more on hard surfaces like ice and gravel, but I can usually get that sorted out by just putting a rag on the ice or digging into the gravel. Where the TRG bipod comes into its own is in field conditions. It digs like a mother into grass, and works better than any other (I have tried) on uneven surfaces. I especially like how it keeps the weight of the rifle lower, and allows the rifle to recoil freely w/o moving the bipod at all. I wish I could adapt it to all my rifles, but to each his own. The other nice thing they are easy to sell and hold their value well.

I have a TRG and wouldn't waste the $400+ for the TRG bipod. It doesn't do anything an Atlas wont at half the price. You can easily buy a rail adapter from Accushot as well.

I would even use a Harris with the rail adapter (you need another pic adapeter for the Harris) before I would buy the TRG.

It's a great bipod, but it's way too expensive IMO.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

If you can afford to spend $350-$400 on a bipod I would NOT spend a cent of it on the Sako bipod.

For that kind of money LR-Accuracy has several far superior products. I've been shooting an "F-class" for a couple months and I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of another one I won at a match recently.

If you are using a Harris on the origninal Sako sling stud up front you will need to shim the bipod to make it snug.
I glued small strips of leather over the existing ones on the bipod to create a spacer, it worked great, and the bipod still works on my other rifles.
The TRG bipod is a great Field bipod, but you have to ensure that you "load" it when shooting, where the Harris is more stable.
I waited for Atlas to come out with their adapter, but as of now I still don't think it is available.
Good luck on your choice.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

While I think the Sako bipod is ridiculously expensive and certainly overpriced, it is F'n great!

I'm surprised to see that several people are of the opinion the harris is more stable. The stance on the Sako bp is wider and feels much more stable to me. I absolutely love the way the rifle is free to cant on the sako - until you load into it, when it locks up rock solid. It is bulky and heavy, and isn't fast or slick to adjust, but as far as providing a stable platform for shooting off of, I think it has no equal.

Get the Harris #6 rail mount adapter for your TRG. I just put one on my TRG 42 and it works perfectly. It cost about $8.00 from Brownells. There is no slop or play in this rail mount.

This is my solution as well.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

I purchased a TRG-22 recently and went with the Atlas bipod with the ADM quick-detach mount. Had to purchase the Sako fore-end accessory rail, which is ridiculously over-priced at something like $235. Is Sako smoking crack?

Sako TRG 22 42 Fore-end Accessory Rail S151F926

Anyway, found the rail on GunBroker new for around $135. Just had to look around a bit.

If you like the Atlas bipod, and many folks do, this is a good option in my opinion. Also, there may be better options for mounting the Atlas that I was not aware of at the time.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

There should be some more TRG bipod options in the future. One company is working on a bipod that sort of looks similar to the RND bipod on the Cheytac, another company is doing an insert for the front slot that will take a rail or Atlas bipod, and we're working on a QD mount for that front slot that will take a variety of accessories. How far these are out is ?

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

Justin, would you know if the front attachments would impede the use of a larger barrel contour then that of the factory contour? I know that if one would go with something like a M40 contour or larger, the barrel would have to be notched on the bottom to get full movement of the factory Sako bipod. I know 99.99% of the people would probably never rebarrel their TRG's but that is a point to consider.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

I have and shoot the TRG-22. I also have the Sako bi-pod. Yes, it is very heavy and cumbersome. However, as one other poster above put it, for those of us who've shot with it, on the TRG it has no equal. Period. I was fortunate in that I was able to purchase mine as a package with the rifle for a great price. There is nothing inexpensive on a Sako, so once that is accepted, going forward is fine. The bi-pod is almost over-built, IMO, but having used it, I wouldn't take any other bi-pod on this rifle, if it were me. Good luck in your shooting.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

I can't speak for the others, but our mount won't protrude into the barrel channel at all, so any barrel that will fit in stock will be fine. I've talked to the other companies about making sure there is plenty of clearance for larger barrels and so they will work with our Whiskey-3 stock.

I do know of one guy who rebarreled and can't use the Sako NV mount. Sako kind of boxed themselves in that way but they probably weren't counting on anyone putting on a heavier contour.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

I would highly recommend the sako bipod if you are doing field shooting, if mostly bench or off concrete stick with harris with shim kit. but in the field the harris does doesn't offer any where near the same stability.

i absolutely love my sako trg 22 with factory bipod

Ditto.
I spent the $350 once and cried. Ever since then, I have truly loved shooting my TRG with the Sako Bi-pod. Worth every crying dime.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

Got my Sako bipod for about $255 on ebay and other than some normal wear marks it was in perfect condition. If I had to pay full price I might have thought twice about it but I do really like the bipod.

My biggest problem right now is that the closest range to me which also happens to be the only range I have been to so far with the TRG is an indoor 100 yrd range so all surfaces are concrete. While prone it is not as big of a deal as I can back onto my shooting mat and get a little bit of something to dig into with the bipod but it is not ideal.

If a nice alternative comes out, like a spigot for the front so that I can use an Atlas I might be tempted to switch.

Re: New TRG 22 with ? about Sako bipod

On my 2 TRG's I've bought and used the SAKO, Harris, Atlas, and new version of the Versa Pod. I greatly prefer the Atlas, and have since sold all the others.

I look forward to somebody coming out with a mount that uses the slot in the front of the stock( like the Sako Bipod) that will enable me to use my Atlas up front.
