This is really my first "precision" rifle. Got it a few weeks ago. Its a Winchester Model 70 Stealth in .308 that was a SHOT show special in 2010 I guess. It has the CRF action and a 26" bull barrel. I also found it interesting that it's a four-groove barrel. The scope is a Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10 in TPS rings on an EGW base.

Nothing wrong with 4-groove rifling. The M1 Garand has that and it does just fine. Nice rifle. How does the Weaver scope work for you? Have you shot it for groups yet? Just curious.

Re: New Winchester Model 70 Stealth

I'm still getting used to shooting the rifle, but yesterday I was shooting at 150 yards and the first 3 shots were all in line vertically and were .85" from the center of the top one to the center of the bottom one. Probably just got lucky. And the Weaver seems nice to me, but I haven't really looked through any really high-end optics.

Do you find it weird that a load with a 175gr HPBT is going a little bit into the lands with an overall length of ~2.76"? It seems a bit short to me considering the loading book says the OAL should be 2.8"

I think so because even though this is a .308 and should be a short action, it takes the WSM base just like an SPR.

i was thinking the current winchester and fn's went back to the pre-64 action? im far from an expert on them though.

Re: New Winchester Model 70 Stealth

Well, that tears it. Damnyou!

I have been pondering what flavor of 308 to get lately, and kept hedging between Savage, and Winchester. I have a couple other savages already, and no Winchesters in the safe atm. Guess I will bite the bullet and grab me a Winy!

Thanks!

Re: New Winchester Model 70 Stealth

It's decent I guess. The forearm is pretty wide (which could be a good or bad thing, I guess, depending on your situation). It has an aluminum bedding block and the aluminum goes all the way to the front swivel studs. Also, there is a decent amount of room around the barrel, and the forearm doesn't flex at all.

Please be very carefull in regards to this, EGW has the dimensions for the hole spacing on the Win receivers. I have an EGW 20 moa base on my Win Mod 70 Heavy Varmint, so measure and check with the EGW website.

My 70 is Awesome and will shoot any .308 ammo well you can find to feed it, FGGM, Black Hills, Win white box or just grab a handfull of military surplus with mixed headstamps and watch it bang the steel. Just ask Short Bus!

He's not kidding. Everytime we go out shooting he busts out a plastic baggie of surplus ammo that looks like he dug it up from the beaches of Normandy. Various headstamps, dates, stages of corrosion, you name it. He's hanging with my rifle with match grade hand loaded ammo. Group sizes that would make anyone give a nod of approval.

Chet, you could at least tumble the cartridges a bit so they don't look so awful, lol!

Re: New Winchester Model 70 Stealth

Been kicking around the idea of getting one of the new Stealth's myself. Winchester dropped them from their website for a few months and they just recently showed up again. Its nice having another alternative to the Remmy and Savage.

Re: New Winchester Model 70 Stealth

Yes, dimensionally the same as the FN SPR action (it is a WSM action when shopping for bases) and takes the same scope base… however the FN action uses larger heavy duty base screws. I have one of both and the barrel profile is nearly the same as well just two inches longer with no chrome lining. Your chamber is fine, the one I have is like that too, just do a proper load work up.
