I bought this unit for cheap. But that’s probanly because it’s cheaply made! Lol I don’t know much about night vision and figured it’s time to start learning. Any info on this unit and advice would be much appreciated. It does work well with a minor blem in tube....

Here is the link to a good thread on PVS-14s which may help you: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/buying-a-pvs-14-a-guide.54415/

There are a lot of non Mil-spec manufacturers of NVGs that look similar to the military version. The tubes won't be to as high a standard and there is little doubt that the unit won't be as survivable if subjected to any shock. However, this doesn't mean that the unit you have won't work for your purposes.

Dude, for $500 with an image that clear? Fuck it, keep it. Get another nice one from Vic at TNVC and get the phosphor hand select tube. Game fucking over.

It does look like a cheaper body, certainly not ITT or L3. Maybe ATN? There were a couple of other mfg.'s that made lots of cheaper stuff but I can't recall the names. Or if they're still around. Besides looking cheap, it's doubtful to have very good shock isolation and likely doesn't have any of the upgrades newer ones have, like autogates, etc. Does it use two batteries? Couldn't tell in the picture. The old 14's used two batteries, the new ones only use one.

Anyway, keep the one you have there for mounting behind a spotting scope (that's what I'd use it for without a doubt). Or a camera. Or for use in the car or truck or on the person as a handheld. Hell, all the light duty uses. Like was said, I wouldn't mount it on a rifle, even a 5.56. It does look cheap. But it looks like a good image too (a really good one in fact) and that makes it useful for all but the rough stuff. Someone put a nice tube in a turd, go figure? But it's your score.

Here's mine behind a spotting scope, another member here made the mount for me. I have to use this one for a head mount, it's the only one I have, but a dedicated one would be nice for sure. Especially one not as costly as a good unit, because while the body doesn't take much abuse, the tube does if it sits on one image for too long.

Vic at TNVC won't blow smoke up your ass and can discuss other options and ideas on what to do with what you have. If you're determined to put that tube in another unit, he can make that happen too. Good luck, and awesome score, not bad for $500 IMO. FWIW, $500 night vision never looks that good, it's usually gen. 2 AND cheap.

Thx Vet for the ideas. Yeah I’m pretty sure this housing is low rent! Lol But the tube is nice and i’d Like to throw it into a better weapon sturdy housing. Wasn’t really looking for a second unit right now as a few other hobbies are eating up my funds for now. Damn racing jet ski! Lol I’d really like a milspec housing for this non-Wired tube. And Yes this unit is single CR123.

This tube though is great in a completely dark garage with IR on.
