Rifle Scopes NewBe that is confused and needs advice

I am just getting into shooting and will be doing targets at 100-300 yd ranges (nothing longer in Tx. available for me). I am looking at a nightforce (either 3.5-15x or 5.5-22x) on a Remington 700 308.
My confusion centers around reticle, Mil dot vs. NP-R1, why one over the other. And which of the two scopes mentioned above is best for this type of shooting.
Also, whats the deal regarding mil knobs vs. MOA knobs. If this is to elementary for this forum, can you point me to where to learn more.

The first thing you need to do is figure out which angular measurment system you prefer (mills or MOA). Do some research on the pros and cons of each and then play around with some figures.

If both are totally foreign to you, I would personally recommend you learn the mil system (that way you do not have to swith later).

After you find out which one you like better, you can narrow your options. An NP-R1 reticle is an MOA reticle (and there are many other MOA reticles as well). A Mildot is a mil regticle (and there are many, many other mil reticles as well).

Which even way you think will work best for you, make sure that you get turrets that match your reticle, i.e. MOA/MOA or mil/mil.

Use the "search here" link in my sig. and type "mil moa" You will find so much info that your head might explode.

Thanks, you are right, after doing some research, my favorites list is exploding and my head is next. Best advice I got so far is pick one, and get to shooting. Then the learning will really start. Thanks again for your response.

There may be ranges longer then 300 in Tx but not near where I live. All our land is private land so can not go out into the country and find a place unless a land owner will allow you, not likely unless you know someone. There are some training schools for shooting in Tx and they may allow some long range shooting. Right now I just want to learn to shoot what is availalble to see if more time and money is warrented. My eyes are not what they were when I was on a rifle team in school.

IMO a new shooter who is just getting started should first become proficient with open sights. And since you are only shooting 100-300 yards you should be able to become very proficient with open sights. And you would also probably enjoy your shooting a lot more. Nothing like good solid gong hits with "Big Girl". Try it first before you spend a lot on scopes. I am much more impressed with a guy who can hit a gong off handed at 300 yards(open sighted) than a guy who shoots a $10,000 rig in bitty groups at 1,000. Tom.

Besides Tiger Valley and Rifles Only, where are some other places to shoot long range in Texas?

I'd be interested to know as well, right now when I want to shoot 500-1200 yds I have to go to a friend's ranch in Leon county.

I'm sure you can get a few guys on here to show you a bit longer ranges if you just stick around for a few days.
You live in Texas for Chris sake, everything is bigger there, including the ranges that I have seen.
Drive to shoot, so be it. Have fun while you do.
Find one.

I am in Georgetown Tx. Will use the Eagle Peak in Leander. After learning to handle 300yds, would like to move to longer ranges. Any suggestions.

Hell, you are only 75 miles south of Waco, hence Tiger Valley. That's closer than many of us drive to shoot long range. I usually go to Tac Pro and it is 90 miles for me.

With Tiger Valley, you just need to keep watch for open dates.

Join Austin Rifle Club (physically in Manor) and shoot High Power with us. ARC is only 200 yards. Temple also has an active High Power Club and we shoot up to 300 yards there. You will get enough fun even shooting 200 and 300 only. Depends where you are in Georgetown, the two clubs could very well be equidistance to you.

This Saturday there is a match in Temple, come on out, you can watch or you can shoot and you don't have to shoot the full course. You can infiltrate during the prone slow fire at 300. If the high power 600 yard target reduced at 300 is not challenging enough, we can put up a F-Class 1/2 minute X ring for you. The reduced 600 target at 3 has a 2.8 inch X ring.

BTW, you can shoot your scoped rifle, though most of us shoot service rifles. We welcome new shooters to the clubs, if you need to borrow any gear, PM me.

Come on out and have fun...


You will learn how to execute and call your shots in these short ranges where you don't have to contend with the wind at the same time as you would at the longer ranges. Shoot for Xs, clean with 10+ Xs is a SMART goal...cheers
