ok i took a trip to the range to pick up brass to reload an there was hundreds of rounds of 7.62x39 a guy said i was wastin my time pickin it up because it was CHINESE brass an i couldn't reload it. i thought i only couldn't reload steel cases I picked it up any way just in case (yes it was all brass)

Re: newbie reloader in an argument

Any brass is relaodable, theoretically.

BUT

The Chinese ammo he is talking about has some major setbacks. The first being that it's most likely Berdan primed, which makes the process rather long and involved. The second is that the brass is most likely either bad brass or some sort of potmetal mix, making it a dangerous undertaking.

The third issue is the gun it was most likely fired through itself-it's the equivalent of shooting .308 through an M60...the shambers are made to fire dirty, hence they are large, and the brass is greatly distorted as a result.

I would avoid it, personally.

Re: newbie reloader in an argument

Some is, some isn't. Depends on if it is boxer primed (one flash hole) or Berdan primed (2 FHs)....

Re: newbie reloader in an argument

Look down inside and see if it has 1 flash hole or two. If it has 2 flash holes it's Berdan primed and for most applications can't be reloaded. It CAN be reloaded. But the hardware and the primers aren't readily available in the US. If the case is actually brass, save them for scrap.

Re: newbie reloader in an argument

and if it has the two FH you still have a little money on your hands.just keep saveing it along with the bad brass you already have and sale it when you get enough to sale at the scrap yard.

Better to lose an argument and be wrong and learn something than win an argument and still be wrong and not learn anything

You have scrap brass...hell I pickup 22LR brass while waiting for my barrel to cool at the local range.....might as well spend the time constructivly. I pick up any brass I see...my uncle's Yugo AK brass still brings scrap metal price.
