Newly found M1 Garands

I didn't hear a specific number but I heard about some phillipine ones coming to the market via the CMP
Well, since plastic had not exactly been invented when the Garands were issued... that seems far-fetched. I think they came in grease paper.
But there are a lot coming from the PI. But I would not call them new. I suspect, most will need some work by CMP.
That said... Garands that need work are far better than no Garands at all!
If there are some new ones out there that have been found... sign me up. But I suspect the ones that are coming in from the PI are the ones your gunsmith was referring to.

Keep an eye on the CMP/DCM web site. Make sure you have your qualifications and paperwork in order. Order one fast when they release them!

The PI rifles, as mentioned, will go through the CMP. Before being sold, they will be inspected, repaired and graded. No repairable rifles will be stripped for parts. Some of those parts will be set aside for the Advanced Maint. Clinic. Some parts will be sold as parts.
I keep hearing people say they cant wait to get one. Thats odd, the CMP has rifles NOW, starting at $730 delivered. You want one, order it today. But remember the CMP has more rifles then what is listed. They have to be inspected, repaired if needed, then when there is enough to justify listing they will be listed.
So when the listed rifles are Sold Out. Keep checking, another batch will show up soon.
In short, if you want one, you dont have to wait for the PI rifles (which will be a while getting through the system).
Its really simple, You need to be a Citizen, you need proof of marksmanship activities, and you need to be a member of a CMP Affiliated Club. But check the CMP web site for eligibility requirements. They are simpler then it sounds like. For example, the Shooting requirement can be a CC Permit, military/vet service, Hunter safety, etc. Club can be the Garand or Carbine Collectors Assn. and others if there isnt a CMP club close buy. But I believe all state's riffle Assn. are CMP affiliated.
Geees, if you want one buy one. The longer you wait, the more expensive. I bought my first for $112.70, the last one was in Dec. $630, now they are $730. Prices wont come down. Forget the PI rifles, just order a Garand from the CMP.
Or you can go to Cabela's. Just yesterday I found they had some M1s. Some real junk starting at $1495. But if you get a CMP $730 rifle, it will work and be safe. If something weird slips through, the CMP will make it right, fix or replace their slip ups.
If you get one for heaven's sake, shoot it, they weren't met to hang on a wall or set in a gun safe. I still shoot my $112.70 rifle from the early 80s in CMP matches. It shoots great.

Those PI rifles will run the gamut of quality. I wont be surprised if there are some new in the wrap, there will likely be presentation rifles from their drill units and than there will be some rough pitted war horses that were carried through the Zambales.
Its all good.
There will be some good historical pieces. Likely left by American units with their new owners at the end of WWII as well rifles that were supplied to our PI allies during the cold war.
Bring those Americans home.
Lets hope the PI has MAPP 1911s that get to come home too.

I had a nice CMP Garand I received pre-internet when they came to my local range... We had to shoot them to be eligible to buy them (100 yard slow fire iron sights, but it was an easy shoot). I sold it a few years ago... Dumb I know... But I never shot it. I think I still have a couple cans of ammo and clips.
Mine was marked Springfield Armory and it shot well. I still remember the day the mail man rolled up with the cardboard box!

What kinda barrel life can be expected with a M1? Also, back when Garands were still being used in Service Rifle, what did most folks run for their 600yd load?
The old LC rounds were fine. I don't think LC makes 30-06 any longer (but I may be wrong). I have one partial can left. I just sold a 400-round can that was all original: lot # on the can matches the lot # on the ammo inside! I never even realized that...
I never took the M1 beyond 100 yards so I can't comment but it (mine anyway) seemed to shoot really well unless I wasn't doing my part. With the above ammo. I don't have data, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it shot 1 minute.

Barrel life is pretty good. My first Garand was made in Aug '41, I'm not sure how many rounds were fired through it before I got it, but I've fired thousands. When running Sniper Schools for the Guard using M1C/Ds, I'd take it out and shoot it until the sap was melting from the handguards.
Got to Shooting CMP Garand Matches and it did good up until a couple years ago. It went south and while at the CMP OK City games in 2014 I bought a new barrel and they put it on for me. There is no doubt that it will out last me and I shot a lot, I mean a LOT in my Garands.
We used a lot of the M72 ('06 Match w/173 gr bullets). It shot good plus I didn't have to buy it. It doesnt appear to be available so the closest (actually better round) to it is the 175 SMK with 48 Grs. of 4064. That should be in the neighborhood of 2620 FPS. Its a safe Garand load.
It'll get you well past 600. I've shot a lot at 1000. It will also match up with the sights on your Garand. Meaning sight it in at any distance. Set your dial to that distance. Then the sight markings will line up at what ever distance you choose to 1200 yards. (limit of the sight makes on the elevation dial.
Get a Garand. If the barrel dont suit you, get a new one from the CMP. They are easy to install and chances are they that barrel will out live you.
They have throat and barrel erosion gages. They are fun to play with when dickering over the price of a gun, but dont judge the life of the barrel on those. Let your groups dictate that. I've seen M1s that would swallow an throat erosion gage out shoot others that measure 5 or less.

I have a Garand that I bought at Roses department store while stationed in Virginia.
While I was overseas, my Dad bought a new barrel and had it installed for me (Eastern Washington state).
Apparently, whoever did the install decided to torque the barrel so hard, it twisted the action, of course, it tweaked the op rod as well. This happened years ago and I recently diagnosed the problem.
Can you recommend someone that works on Garands?
Do you know of anyone in Texas?
