Rifle Scopes NF 3.5-15 MLR MRAD a good starter scope?

Hey all,

Is the Nightforce 3.5-15x56 with MLR reticle and MRAD turrets a good mid-priced scope for a starter?

It's used for about $1300.00 and does <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> contain the zero stop but hey.

This a good deal for a used scope? Would anybody recommend something else for a starter? I plan to use my .308 700P to shoot groundhogs and ranges out to probably 400 yards and hopefully get some range time at a 1000yd range this year.

Thats a great scope, not only to start with, but to stick with unless you choose to go FFP one day.

Would this be a better choice over a Leupold MK4 TMR? If so why and what makes Nightforce stand out from other brands such as Leupold and others with similar type scopes?

My opinion (yours may differ):

Nightforce = reliable but heavy
Leupold = good warranty, and good chance you will need warranty service

What he said... Having both, I would take te NF all day long.... Matter of fact, if you get a NF and prefer a MK4, I'll swap you...

Also, not sure if this is an F-up but OpticsPlanet lists this scope WITH an illuminated reticle... is that right for the prices they are advertising?

Yes, all NXS scopes have reticle illumination.

Check out Eurooptics ( www.eurooptic.com ). He's a member on this site and has the 3.5-15x56 MLR MRAD new for $1300. I bought my NF from him (same model). Great customer service.

Yeah he's the guy I was getting the price off of. How do you turn the illumination on?? Can you post high-res pics of your NF scope for me?

He's about an hour away so I emailed him to see if he does layaway on used optics or not so we'll see if I hear back from him.

You pull out on the end of the Parallax adjustment knob to turn on the illumination. Push in to turn off.

You unscrew the end cap from the parallax knob. Underneath is the battery and circuitry for the illumination. There is a small potentiometer that is adjusted with a jewelers screwdriver. This pot determines the brightness for the illumination circuit, and a small adjustment goes a long way.

The good side is it's simple: pull to engage, push to disengage. The bad side is it's not easily adjustable "on the fly".

I've only had mine for a month, but I think it's a great scope. Knobs can be retrofitted w/ zero stop for $320 if you decide later you need that. Mine is very well built and well finished. Admittedly, I haven't tried dropping it from obscene heights to test the repeatability. My next scope will either be another NF or a custom USO.

I give it two thumbs up.

The illumination control is a non issue. You'll love the NF.

Just bought one of the 3.5-15x56s from EuroOptic. $1300 and although they're listed in the "used optics" sections it's only because they're closeouts. They're absolutely new in the sealed box. NF just doesn't offer the mil/mil without ZS anymore so they're closing out those ones. I couldn't be happier with mine, and the service was great too. Pretty hard to go wrong with that deal... hell I've recently seen used ones going quickly in the EE for more than that! If you decide later you want ZS then NF can add it for $320 and you're still in it less than buying a new ZS model.

I did the exact same thing. They're also listed in the new optics section. Ordered mine on a Saturday night and was shipped first thing Monday morning. Thank you Alex.

PA, i had one on my Armalite SASS, it was about the right size and with the sunshade on it went down the FF tube about 4 inches from the gas block

Didn't realize NF scopes were that reasonable. That's not bad at all.

Just checked them out. Wish they had the MOA version on clearance.
