I have a few friends looking to get into the long range game and I'm putting together a spread sheet of various optics across a range of price points and features.
I have always held the opinion that there is nothing wrong with SFP optics provided that the ranging is done at the highest power setting. My train of thought with this is that if the optic is 3-10X for example and it ranges at 10x its going to be a consistant reading as you turn the power ring untill it stops and you are at the correct power.
While trying to put this info together I read in both NF and Loopys online tech info that "In most cases" ranging is performed at the highest power setting. I know this is not true of the higher magnification NF optics and I'm uncertain of Leupold.
For those of you that have them could you provide the power to range at for the following optics:
Leupold MK4 8.5-25
Leupold MK4 6.5-20
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22
Nightforce NXS 8-32
Any other information for optics not listed also welcomed (Trijicon,Weaver,Bushnell etc).
I would also be curious to get some feedback on using higher power SFP optics that dont range at the highest setting. I just wonder if I'm making it out to be more of an issue than it actually is. To date I have owned primarily fixed 10X and FFP optics with the only two exceptions being a MK4 3.5-10 and NXS 3.5-15 in both cases they dat max power so no big deal to me.
