I am in the process of building along range rifle (tactical). I am torn between
this
Night Force NXS 5.5-22x56 or

Leupold MARK 4 LR/T RIFLE SCOPE 8.5-25 X 50 M1 MIL DOT

What are advantages or disadvantages. Are the NF's really woth the extra dough?

I have always had Leupold man but....

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

NF is about $1800 with mil knobs and zero stop and comes with illuminated MLR reticle.

Leupold is about $1580 with non reticle matching MOA knobs, no zero stop and not illuminated.

If those are the choices I'd pay the extra approximate $220 for a NF but it's your money.

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

I think the biggest advantage to the NF is having matching reticles and knobs. Although, I feel the glass is better with the NF as well.

In other words: A mil based reticle with knobs that adjust in mil's OR a minute based reticle with minute based clicks.

With a little research (as mentioned above). You'll see the advantages fairly quickly.

Go with the NF and don't look back.

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

I have both and favor the NF in ALL ways. I really like the turrets on the NF better. If I'm shooting long ranges and changing my dope alot I have found the 10 MOA is easier to keep track of better than 14 MOA per revolution.

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

+1 for the NF

Never owned a Loopy mk4, but their name has been branded as a let down from what ive heard.

Until i see the people (as in us) actually start mentioning that loopy have picked up their game and fulfill the role they claim to hold, I wont purchase a product that I fear may be under quality.

Just my 0.02

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

better late than never, Leupold seems to be getting the message

Now with matching Mil knobs (.1 MRAD) and FFP . Oh and Zero stop is as easy as some plastic washer shims. which works for either nightforce or leupold and allows you to dial below Zero for the days your HIGH.

Watch out Nightforce!

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

I have the 8.5 x 25 MK4 TMR and my biggest complaint is the side parallax adjustment. I have to re-set it after every shot, not because the parallax is off just a little but because the focus is shot to hell and I cannot see the target. I have never uses the NF but I see one in the future.

Well try tighting it up or send it in, thats not a hard fix.

Tighten it up? Any info on how?

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

That Leupold is sometimes available slightly discounted for around $1300 ( Bruno's is one place) so there is a few dollars in price difference.Yes, the NF is better but only you can decide if it's worth $500 bucks more, you have to figure out how serious you are about this.I have both of those and I prefer the NF but I will say I'm NOT unhappy with the Leupold, it works,it's clear, and it's repeatable. It's too easy to get caught up in the whole spending trend on high end optics. If you can afford it and need it, I say go for it.But too many people buy shit they don't really need when instead they should get what they can afford and simply go shoot.

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

NF offers crisper glass and most important its way more forgiving regarding eye relief and eye position.
Mk4 will easily give you those black edges and it feels slower to gain focus.
I have a Mk4 5,5-20 mildot on a .223 VSSF and a NF 3,5-15 NPR1 on a .338 LM, and the LM is just as fast on follow-ups even with the recoil.
As a makeshift spotting scope, I find it easier to make out trace and .223 holes in white paper with the NF at 100 yds than the Mk4, even with the higher magnification.
My opinin and experiences though...

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

Definitely the Nightforce that way you can go MIL/MIL (FFP if you want) or MOA/MOA whichever you prefer.

Re: NF or Leupy????????????????????????

I have had several NXSs over the years and several Mark 4s. I no longer own any NF scopes, but still have two Mark 4s and I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

Both the NF and the Mark 4 are good scopes to me and I would get whichever fits your needs the best. IMHO, NF gets the edge in reticle/adjustment choices only. I have never owned a NF with glass as good as either of my Leupolds, so my assessment of glass quality seems to differ from most who responded. To me, NF has good glass, but I have never seen the "improvement" over the Mark 4 glass that so many rave about.

I would also say the anyone who has a Mark 4 with parallax issues, 14 MOA per revolution or trouble making out .223 holes at 100 yards needs to send it in for repair.
