Hunting & Fishing Night hunter roll call !!!!

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

Yup, i do. I look forward to 5-6 days of full moon each month from December to March all year. All I use is the moon, snow and my day optics. Nothin' Better!!

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

We can hunt feral hogs in SC with a pistol only at night with no optics and no light devices attached to the pistol, no flashlight or spot light. You may have a head lamp with belt attached battery only.

I use a Nite Lite Tracker 80,000 Candle 6 Volt, and a Taurus Raging Bull 6" barrel revolver in 454 casual.

I have killed coyotes with a 22 mag at night, but It wasn't hunting, it was more of pest control around chicken pins.

Also run the Nighthunter and Walkabout kit... The new lights with dimmer on them are incredible !

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

pvs-14 gen3 omni vII tube. run it on my spr generally with streamlight stinger with an ir filter. it works great either coupled up to a dayoptic or headmounted with an ir laser of your flavor. 0-300yd no problem under most dark conditions. with 1/2 to full moon 500-600yds. the darker the better though in my opinion. animals are generally much more comfortable when it's dark with no moon. that has been my experience though.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

I haven't been for a long time but now that I have quite a bit of ground to hunt on, I will be going as much as possible. Nothing like snow on the ground with a full moon.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

I have a callin platform for back of truck, Qbeam light, electronic call.
We do really good at nite, like fresh cut fields in summer.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

For predator hunting here in NY, I use a Streamlight Ultrastinger flashlight. Had a Lightforce 170, but it was too much light & too much to carry. the 170 is great for wide open expanses, but I'm hunting relatively small crop fields. The Ultrastinger has a Butler Creek Blizzard scope cap over the front with the clear lens colored with a red Sharpie on the inside.
Nothing sexy and it won't light you up a landing strip, but it's plenty enough to whack coyotes & fox out to 150yds. Add another 50yds easy with a skiff of snow. Lightweight, portable & not fatiguing to pan/scan the terrain with it in one hand out front of the shooting stix...

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

runing one of several set ups, either a pvs-14 behind a eotec on an m4 or a pvs-22 in front of a elcan on a m4. also can run the pvs-22 in front of my uso sn3's on my .260 or .22-250. runing handheld thermal to help locate targets... insight MTM w/ ir designator. all my rifle are wearing cans, have a thunder beast arms 223p1 for my 22 cal and a 30p1 for my .260, 7mm, and .30 cal.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

I run AVS9's head mount with a nv compatible micro t1 piggy backed on a nightforce. 308 Subsonic suppressed death in the dark.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

For night hog hunting in south and central Texas I run a 7.62x39 AR with 1.5-4 Leupold and a Rem 700 Mil Spec 308 with Leupold Mark 4 4.5-16. I have a 3rd gen PS40 night vision scope that clips on in front of the either of the Leupolds. On dark nights I use a Luna Laser IR illuminator (invisible to the naked eye). The mil spec sports an AWC Thundertrap suppressor. The AR with the clip on is great for out to about 150 yards. The mil spec with the laser illuminator and suppressor gets me out 500+.

I don't! That's the beauty of it.
I'm only swinging a flashlight to pan for eyes, not the whole rifle. When it's time to shoot, I have the Ultrastinger in my left hand and just grab the left leg of my shootin' stix with a few fingers. When I get down on the scope, just a little hand manipulation gets the light just where I want it.
Sounds strange, but works pretty well...
But again, I'm not shooting more than 200yds, nor do I have the luxury of hunting from a vehicle. So I've learned by trial & error that lightweight & portable works best for my area...

picture of you rig would be cool. how is your t1 mounted exactly? do you have it in tandom behind the nightforce or on an offset mount. so exactly what are you referencing for an aiming point with your nods head mounted?

thanks,

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

This is a pic of my LTR. Gap is building me my new stick as we speak with a AX chassis.

I've got the micro site sighted in for 50 yard subsonic 180gr RN With the 9's you just use the red dot as you normally would without nvg's
ltr.jpg

Not hunting at night since its not legal here. Only used for target shooting and the occasional problem varmint

I used this type system back when we would do the old scenario paintball games at night. the 9's have no magnification. Mounted a low intensity red dot scope on a quiet pump and go headhunting. It was like fighting muppetts.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

What kind of calls do you guys use? I'm thinking about getting an electronic one so I thought I would get some opinions first.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

Or PVS14 behind a T1.

Both suppressed and both in 300 Blackout.

We also use a integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44 with a IR laser mounted on the bottom. By far the quietest setup for killing critters at night.
</div></div>

What kind of head mount are you using on your anvis9?

How do you like running the IR laser? Ive had good results with a standard red laser. They dont seem to spook animals and you can quickly dial them in while looking through your primary scope for whatever range you are expecting. Quick to verify the laser didnt get bumped out of zero too.

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

We were using the good ole skateboard helmets but recently upgraded to the Ops Core helmets with Norotos mounts. Been looking into trying some Wilcox mounts to save a little on weight.

As for lasers, we have used a lot of different kinds. The IR works well and we rather not even have it seen for hog extermination around the suburbs we help clean up.

Open fields we use the 300BLK base ARs since we can get by with the super sonic crack. Close to residential areas, the 77/44 is just hard to beat a 300gr XTP when it comes to slamming some hogs!

Re: Night hunter roll call !!!!

I usually go sit in the bed of the truck in a pasture with a 10000000 candle light q-beam and just flip it on every so often and check for eyes. Every now and then we put out corn, and we are usually successful.
