Hello everyone, I'm new to the fourm and first I'd like to say thanks in advance for all of those who help. I have a Remington 700 5R chambered in 300 Win Mag. It is in an HS Precision PST013 with a Vais muzzle brake and a Nightforce 20 MOA base. The only thing I need is an optic, I bought this rifle for recreational target shooting and the farthest out I plan to shoot is 700 yards (would like for the rifle to go farther but that's what I'm limited to as far as ranges go in my area go). I've looked at many different scopes and have just about narrowed it down to the Nightforce NXS 8-32x56, I really like this optic due to it's high magnification, I know the 300 Win Mag is a pretty flat shooting round and my main concern is the 8-32x56 has 65 MOA of elevation +20 (due to the base) so 85 in total. Is that enough elevation adjustment for that cartridge/rifle combination to be used effectivley at the range I'd like to shoot out to and is that enough to for this rifle to reach out beyond that to it's full capability? I don't want to build this rifle around my range's limitations or my own. I'd like for it to be as effective as possible even if I am only able to shoot out to 700 yards here locally. I would love to have an optic with this high of magnification I just don't want to handicap myself without enough internal elevation adjustment. I am 110% open to differnt scopes or different brands my price range is about $1800. As I said I'm new so I'd love to hear what the guys out here that have been doing this for a while and know their stuff have to say. Lots of guys go by the 100 yds = 1 mag equation, so 700 yds = 7x.
Personally, I don't mind having a bit extra, for a win mag I'd say 15-25x and you'd be covered even if you find yourself getting more range sometime. 32x might be more than you need. (keeping in mind opinions are just that...)
for $1,800 you'll be able to look at some nice stuff. NightForce comes to mind immediately. [full disclosure, I did just by one]

I have two 8-32 x56. One on 338LM and one on 408CT. The 338LM had a 20 min. base and I had to go up to 45 min. to shoot mile. It shot 1000m with plenty to spare. The 408 came with a 40 min. base. I'm doing a mile with it and have about 40 min. left.I can see my hits at 1 km. Love Nightforce.

their other range is a lot closer to you (eldridge/I10), but you cant shoot centerfire rifles there....just pistols and rimfire

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who's replied so far. If I were to use a 40 MOA base with the 8-32x do you think that it would bump me up too high when my elevation is set all the down to the lowest to shoot 200 yards as a minumum?

The NF 8-32x56 has 65 MOA total elevation adjustment; that is to say it has 32.5 MOA up and 32.5 MOA down from the factory (optically centered). With a 20 MOA base, that will give you just under 52.5 MOA total upward elevation adjustment (probably something close to 51 MOA from a 100 yd zero). Guaranteed that amount of elevation adjustment with your 300 Win Mag will take you a long way past 1000 yd. How much farther will depend on the load you're using, but as an example I have the same scope on a .308 and reaching 1000 yd was not an issue with respect to elevation adjustment. In addition, you shouldn't have any issue zeroing at 100 yd with that scope on a 20 MOA base, something that may not be possible with a 40 MOA base. The 8-32x56 is a great scope with very good upper magnification level, but still having a decent amount of elevation adjustment. If you noticed, the 12-42x56 only has 45 MOA total elevation adjustment by comparison, which means you're giving up quite a bit of elevation adjustment for the extra 10X upper mag limit.

Thanks a lot for the input gstaylorg. It sounds like the 8-32x56 will be the perfect combo for my rifle. I doubt that I'll shoot past 1,000 yards, and if I do it'll be quite sometime until I do. Also I live in Texas so I'd probably be picking up one hell of a mirage with that much magnification about 9 months out of the year lol. I own a 2.5-10x34 NXS that's mounted on my M1A Scout that's in a Sage EBR chassis and it's probably the finest optic I've used so I certainley am sold on Nightforce now. I would suggest get a ballistics calculator. Decide on the ammo your going to shoot put in the calculator then set up your scope.
I think magnification is like horse power more is better.
