Rifle Scopes NightForce BR

I am thinking about ordering a new NightForce scope in the next day or two. I am picking up a 300WSM from the gunsmith in the next couple of days. I already have a scope for this rifle, I am taking one off my 22-250 that I had built with a 1in8 Krieger barrel. The new scope will be for my 22-250. This is strictly a fixed position ground hog rifle.

I have narrowed my purchase down to either a NightForce BR in 12X42 or a 8X32, and a US Optics 16X straight power. I am pretty sure I am going to go with the 12X42 NightForce with the NP-R2 reticle. The only thing I do not like about the NF is the 1/8 clicks instead of 1/4 clicks. The rifle will be used for hunting out to 700 or 800 yards, and some shooting at the 1,000 yard range.

My major concern is 100% reliabe tracking. I am looking for any opininos on this glass. I have ruled out the NXS so please do not recommend that series.

My price limit is $1300. And right now Bear Basin has a 12 month same as cash purchase on Night Force scopes. So I thought I might take advantage of that. However if I can get more scope for the same money(less than $1300) then I would just go ahead and buy it now. The 0% is not the reason I am buying the Night Force right now. It is just a bonus.

Below is a picture of the rifle the scope is going to go on. It does not have an elevated base on it right now. I am shooting the 75 grain A-Max at 3400 fps. Do you think I will need a 20MOA base?? And what rings would you recommend?? Thanks, Tom.

I'd recommend the 8-32 for a couple of reasons, first being more internal elevation. It has 50 MOA as opposed to the 12-42's 40. Doesn't sound like alot but if you have a 20 MOA base you might have a hard time zeroing at 100 with the 40 MOA.

Second, the 8-32 is a ton of magnification. 32x is more than enough to hit targets to 1000 no matter what they are. I have no problem seeing and shooting at a 5" dot at 1000 with my 15x F1.

The 1/8 clicks are because it is a BR scope so they want uber precision in the adjustments and on that note I am very sure the scope will track perfectly.

I have the NightForce BR 8-32X56 and I am very happy with the tracking resulution and picture quality X32 is more than enough for me I can only recomend it I use it for target shooting at all ranges up to 1500 meter and can only say good things about it

If it makes you feel any better, a few FCSA competitors use the BR models on the 50BMG rifles, so I'd say tracking and repeatability are pretty solid. But if there are any issues, the NF staff is very helpful and will honor their warranty no questions asked.

I'll add one more thing to consider, with high magnifications mirage comes into play for longer shots. Other than that, Rob01 pretty much summed it all up. And I'd also recommend the 8-32x for all the reasons he listed.

I have several NF scopes including a BR in 12-42.That one is mounted on a dedicated bench rifle so the xtra mag doesn't hurt.They are solid, very clear, and super reliable.Only thing I could say against one is that they are a BIG scope and the AO is not as convenient for changing ranges as a side focus.On my 22-250 I've mounted a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 for the same type use as what you proposed.The glass is easily just as clear, it's a smaller package and side focus makes it easier to use.It's also in the similar price range.Just my opinion of what I think would work better.
