Rifle Scopes NightForce direct mount for Rem 700: bedding?

Hi guys, I'll be installing the NightForce direct mount on my Remington 700 5R. The NightForce mount direction says lapping is not needed on the rings to install the scope. However, is bedding required or recommended for the contact between the mount and the rifle?

The mount currently seems to sit pretty flush on contact, but thought I'd ask because I would not want to miss a preventive step. Thanks in advance.

Did you locate the instructions online? I have the 20 MOA mount - and it came without any printed material.

the instructions came with my NightForce scope. the 20 MOA mount is what i have as well.

I did not bed mine and it's been rock solid since the day I put it on.

It is a very solid arrangement on the Remington receiver.

I cannot imagine any benefit from bedding it. But, I suppose some guys like to fiddle with stuff. I find time is better spent at the range.

The benefit is that very seldom is the top bridge of the receiver true to the mounting surface of the base. This means that you are very slightly bending the mount when you torque it down. This bending results in the mis-alignment of the rings.

Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not.

The PRECISION in a precision rifle comes from precisely fitting the components.

I don't dig just honking down on the screws to make the parts fit together.

Bedding a base or a mount is an extremely simple process. It's not going to kill you if you don't do it. It's just the difference between a job well done and a job done.

I mounted mine without lapping or bedding. The fit was very good and the scope has been rock solid for over a year and more than 1000 rounds.

Why not bed the base?

It is a very simple process. Personally I like the rifle to be as perfect as possible and leave the errors up to me.

the bedding process seems very straightforward indeed. question is, how durable and resilient is the J-B Weld once dried and with however amount of pressure applied by the mounting screws? does the epoxy compress minutely over time?

just playing devil's advocate - the immediate precise fitting is without question, but then we're also adding an additional element into the setup which may become a variable in regards to long-term reliability?

just thinking out loud.

JB Weld is a VERY durable material. Especially if use the normal JB Weld, not the Quick Dry. We used it in derkastan to fix leaks on engines and even repaired a hammer. Is it as strong as metal? No, but it'll do the job for bedding.

I always snug down the front mount screw first, and see if the back of the base lifts..... If it lifts at all, even if its only a few thousands,the base gets bedded.

Hears a pic of the bottom of my Farrell base off my Savage. Front was good, rear was not. You can see the front of the rear was ok, but it fell off .020" towards rear hole
