Rifle Scopes NightForce MD2 or H58

In the next few days, I plan to purchase a NF F1, but I’m still not sure what reticle to get. Currently the F1 is offered in NP-R1, MLR, MD2, LV.5 and H58. F1 Reticles. I’m looking for a reticle in MILS, so the NP-R1 is out. I’m not a big fan of the MLP or LV.5. This leaves the MD2 and H58. I’m leaning towards the MD2, but after reading and watching I’ve seen the advantages of the H58. I would like to hear your thoughts on both these reticles, before I buy the F1.

Additional information for the person who wants to know: I plan to use these F1 on a R700 in 7mm Rem. Mag. I have a range where I am capable of shooting 1200 yards.

I'm not a fan of the Hours RETs. or BDC RETs. I really like the NF MD2 and the MLR2.0. The MD2 a great reticle for fast shooting.

Not to sound like a jackass(for the people who just post MLR, with no reason why I should look into it again)but I will repeat myself: I do not like the MLR. It is a MD2 with lines, the lines blend into the targets and I find it difficult to use. Whereas, the H58 has the ability to allow me to watch and correct my shot location, this overrides the fact it is a line-based reticle. Having said this, Is the H58 worth the extra 500 dollars than the MD2?

the h58 in the nf is an absolute cluster fuck i have shot several horus reticles in different scopes and i like the concept i just dont care for the nightforce offering and i am a die nf guy

The H58 Horizontal stadia line is thicker than what it should be in the NF F1 Scopes. When compared to all the others. The problem will be fixed when they come out with some newer scopes. They have quite the line up when SHOT Show comes around

you may want to wait.

One either prefers Horus reticles or not. You better get behind one and use it before you make a purchase. I primarily use holdovers and holdoffs so to me the H reticles are the only way to go. Holdovers work! I've won 4 long range matches this year without dialing. Also a prestigious sniper match, IIRC the Internation Sniper Comp, was won last year by J J McQuade using a F1 with H-58. The F1 was broken BTW.


I like the H-58 in my F1 but prefer the H-59's much better in my HDMR's.

H58 without a doubt.

The benefit of the Horus reticles is that, they give you the option of how you want to engage your target. I can make an honest 10 mil holdover, with 4 mils pushed left (that is drastic, but you understand). With a conventional mil dot based reticle you would be dialing to do that, or you would be holding out in space. Now with the Horus I can also dial dope if I need/want to. The nice part there being the "option".

I think Steve123 said it best, it really is a love them or hate them. I have yet to find somebody in between.

This is my first Horus reticle, and I am one of those that love it. Granted it does fill up some of the scope, but I have never felt like the Horus is obscurring anything. I actually shot a SS 5-20 last week, and felt like I was at a disadvantage with the mil-quad reticle versus the Horus. The SS is a great scope though.

aalbert, you ask an interesting question. As you can tell, people all have different opinions about reticles. Steve123 perhaps hit the nail squarely on the head - there is almost noone ambivalent about the Horus reticle. You either like it or you don't. People who don't will say "it's too busy", "it's too complicated", "it's too ... whatever." I happen to be one of the group who likes them.

Before I answer your question I have to ask Mike @ CST a question. Mike, do you consider the Horus reticle to be one of the BDC type reticles? I hope you were separating Horus RETs and BDC RETs into two separate and distinct classes. Because I agree with you on BDC RETs. However, the Horus reticle is a true mils reticle not restricted to any one gun or bullet weight and velocity.

Now aalbert to answer your questions. When I look at the MD2 I see a typical mil-dot reticle but fancier. You have a +/- 5 mil range in both elevation and windage. In order to 'be on target' you need to DIAL your dope and then use the crosshairs. If you are doing a "holdover with windage" you are in clear glass and have to estimate just exactly where that +4.5 up, 1.5 right point is located. The Horus H58 gives me a true 10 mils up at 15x. If I have multiple targets at different ranges I can engage each without having to take the time to readjust the knobs. And heaven help me if the multiple targets comes in a one long, then one short, then one even longer again. With the Horus I zero at either 100 or 200 and don't change the knobs. (Now I can adjust the knobs if I want but I don't need to in order to have an exact aiming point out to 1,000 - 1,200 meters. Even with windage requirements I have exact aiming points.) Another feature I have grown to appreciate is the second shot capability. If I have a spotter who is using the scope with the Horus H36 reticle or another shooter with a Horus reticle they can spot bullet impacts. Should I miss with the first shot, they can give me an exact correction and the second shot can be sent within seconds. This is a big help when doing some long range hunting.

You ask if the Horus is worth the extra $500 - simple put YES.

that md2 is a sexy reticle, just the center illuminates, it's pretty sweet. i'm not a fan of the horus stuff

I've heard some guys say that on the MD2 just a small cross at the center illuminates and others say the entire reticle is illuminated. On the MD2 and the MLR/MLR2 what portion of the reticle gets lit up?

The MD2 and MLR2 versions have just the center illuminated, while the MD2.0 and MLR2.0 versions have the entire intelligent portion illuminated.

Aalbert, have you seen the MLR 2.0?? It is nothing like the older MLR. Based on your post it sounds to me like it would work great for you. I love mine, it shows up good in brush and lowlight, works great at longer distances (have shot to 2500 yds ) and the reticle works great for holdovers.

*BTW, the MLR 2.0 also has bolder outer crosshairs as compared to the first version (MLR 2).

I have an F1 with MLR2.0, it is fantastic. The lines are MUCH more pronounced than the old MLR. The MD2.0 is also very nice, (but you can only holdover 5 Mils with the MD).

Make sure you get the new F1 with Hi Speed MIL Turrets

Horus is WAY too cluttered for me, but to each his own.
