I am looking for a scope for a new .308 build that I will use for F T/R. It looks like the Nightforce 12-42 BR or 12-42 NXS will fit the bill nicely. I am not sure what the exact differences are between these 2 models except thet the NXS is $500 more??

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

Side focus on the NXS and adjustable objective on the BR models. The BR crowd likes the AO BR scopes, tactical users prefer the side focus overall. I have never tried the BR model so I can not say that there is any real difference in optical quality between them, but I seriously doubt that there would be IMO.

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

depends...if u want pratice only bench rest, u must go on BR...for tactical use, NXS is better. i have 2 NXS and i'm very happy

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

I've got one of the 12-42 NXS models. No mil/mlr option, so if that was a motivator for the NXS - not so much. For a .308 I'd probably opt for the 5-22 instead.

$.01, +/-.01

Caveat: I've only shot F-T/R once, usually just shoot the norcal tactical matches, which are still 1k, but a slightly different game. If you really need that much magnification, your call.

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

The other big difference is you get 1/8 MOA adjustments with the BR and the NXS is only offered in 1/4 MOA and doesn't offer the Mil/Mil reticles. Most BR guys prefer the BR for the finer adjustments but if it were me I would go NXS because I don't designate my rifle for only BR

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

The BR model is a couple hundred cheaper, has the uber-reliable AO, a good target reticle, and 1/8MOA turrets. All of those features are beneficial for F-TR: get what you want.

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

Hi JonB

I have been shooting F Class for 5 plus years. This game is totally different than Tactical shooting or Practical unknown distance shooting. It is a pure accuracy game. Therefore, the more scope power you have does, in certain conditions, make a difference. We shoot all year round at my home range in temperatures from -30 to plus 100 F and the only time I am not on the higher powers is in the heat of the summer and then I dial down into the 20 - 25 power range. The rest of the time, I am using 40 plus power.

Nightforce is now coming out with the 1/8 MOA turret adjustments on the NSX series and probably will announce deliveries in the SHOT show because they are telling the dealers to expect stock very soon. The Team Savage F Class team has had them for a while.

The advantage for F class shooting of the NSX series is that the scope has the side focus adjustments making it easy to set the parrallex adjustment point to be in front of the target to see mirage. Using the front focus of the benchrest series is a real pain to do this while shooting prone. In fact, I sold my benchrest scopes in favour of the NSX for this reason.

The advantage of the 1/8 MOA is over blown in my opinion but if I were you I would wait a few months and buy one of the new NSX series coming out shortly. I actually have scopes using both 1/8 and 1/4 moa clicks and the 1/8 is slightly easier on target adjustments to center the group but it isn't a game breaker.

Go with the 12 x 42 NSX with the 1/8 moa.

The 2 reticles in commom use here are the R1 and the DD reticles I started with the DD but have found that I like the R1 better. Other people have stayed with the DD and most of our club uses them.

One other suggestion that is working well in this game is the Sightron 10 x 50 x 60. This scope is half the cost and seems to be slightly easier to focus than the Nightforce series. It is becoming extremely popular due to the cost and performance being equal to the Nightforce.

Good luck.

Steve

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

I would take the NXS. Its what I use for F/TR. You may also want to investigate different magnification options. I typically shoot with a 5.5-22 or 8-32 and have never felt under-equipped.

Re: Nightforce NXS or BR?

The benchrest models also have the fast focus eye piece and unless I'm mistaken the bench models also have a brightness control knob for the reticle on the ocular housing.

According to Nightforce, the glass is the same as well as the internals and both are very though. The NXS is just geared toward field work and is designed so that things can't get accidentally knocked out of whack. I went with the NXS because of the side focus.
