Rifle Scopes Nightforce vs. Leupold

Gentleman,

I need some help. I am currently looking to have our Division purchase new scopes. We are looking at two. Nightforce 5.5-22x50mm or Leupold Mark4 6.5-20X50mm. Any suggestions, preferences, gripes or complaints would be appreciated.

Nothing wrong with a Leupold, but Id take a NXS any day. Hell, Id take a NXS over most scopes.

cant go wrong with nightforce. My only complaint is the entire housing turns when adjusting the magnification and hence the flip up turns with it..still wouldnt trade any of mine for anything , I do own a couple m4 and vx3's which are also great scopes. I think the nightforce is about as tough as they come and would be my first choice in a deployment environment

Although luppy have great customer service, nightforce is the hands down winner in this competition.

I would prob lean towards NF though I havent used them operationally. But speaking of such, be careful of your lower mag setting. Though 22X is cool ot have, you will rarely use it that high, and in certain circ. 5.5 is too much. YMMV. Jeff

As long as mirage allows I default to 22X. Actually, I use 22X more than any other power on my NFs, with 11X running 2nd.

Nighforce on the tracking issue alone, but also because of a better designed parallax (focus) system.

Can I ask: why 22x over the 15x? Do you anticipate using the scope in rural areas for detailed observation with no chance of needing the capability for an off hand or position shot at 3.5x or the need for field of view at a 30yard FFP?

I have two NF 5.5-22x50s and rarely turn them off 22x.

And must rarely shoot moving targets or multiple targets quickly. I also prefer the 5.5-22x, but often times have to turn the power down for ease of use.

As to which is best, NXS wins IMHO simply because of the reticle/adjustment choices and the wider magnification range. Glass, on the ones I have, may be too close to call - although, I think the Mark 4 is better. I have never had a tracking issue with either.

I left it on 22x for that last shoot, since there were none closer than 300, and probably leave it on 22x for the next one. Only shoot timed multiple targets with a scoped long range rig a few times a year too, and leave it on 22x then too, so I can use my MLR reticle for hold under/over. I would not want a fixed 22x, but I rarely dial mine down. Guess it depends on what you're used to and how well your rifle fits.

Wish I had the MLR or NP-R1 on my 5.5-22x. I have the NP-R2, which I love on 22x. Mover holds get a little dicey at lower powers with the 5MOA spacing (on 22x).

I don't have a NX but have shot with lost of shooters that love them. I shoot Horus Visions so I don't have to do any dialing, just hold over and let it fly.

I would shy away from the lupy.

Horus Vision scopes would probably be the way to go if they had a suitable warranty. I just bought a used one to try. Would have bought a new one, but the warranty issue scared me away. The Horus reticle is a little pricey (for me) to add it to a USO.

Since Nightforce is now producing models with FFP reticles, you should be able to solve that problem.

We do encounter urban and rural areas. Our spotters are equipped with CQT's on their M4's. They can engage CQB to 200 yards if needed. The NXS gives us added range with our additional Homeland Security details it seems our AO is expanding.

my gripe with the NF is the illumination isnt easily fied adjusted and the entire ocular turns with the mag ring. I had the Mk4 you are asking about and had a NXS 3.5-15x50 and I dint really think the NF was THAT much better. but yeah, overall it is better.

I like Leuold glass ,from what I'M told the Horus glass is only fair. I don't like the bright glare in glass. Is NX glass on par with the Lupy? We'er throwing all this stuff around ,why not stick some prices on these scopes? Got my first mil-dot scope SS,am disspointed with the glass,bright glare.

I only use 22X!

Adjust it down only for close up coyote and varmints.


Doesn't make sense to shoot it at the lower magnification, when the higher one will be more on the money, TO ME.

My point being, he stated that his DEPT. was acquiring the glass, therefore more likely LE applications, and in that circ., to keep glass at 22X is an extreme deficit, and will greatly hider operations, (Not engaging coyotes). However if 200+ overwatch is a reality, then yes, 22X can have benefits but still, field of view from an OP is still essential. JMHO. But again, between NF and Leup., NF wins.

The gentlemen's question warranted clarification based on need of optic, but the overall consensus steered towards shooting tiny groups on paper), or long range hunting where you fill your objective with bad guy fur. I know it may not be the best of the best but I like Leupold especially the Mark 4 with TMR reticle. The hollow 1/8th minute center is awesome for precision work with the 6.5 x 20. If money is tight (as it is with most Dept. funds) Leupold is a great way to go.

JamieD Iv had both Leupold an NF an they have both falled on me but the Leupold has always come out on top so thats all I shoot its not the money it preferance.

I agree with you. It took me a while but Leupolds are on all of my rifle now : ) Custimer service on scopes I had the TMR reticle installed in was first class all the way. Great company and great scopes!

with night force there arent really any deals out there unless you buy an used one. All the dealers will basically charge the same. right now the going price is $1632 for the regular 5.5-22x56 with no add on options. Im pretty sure you cant get one cheaper than that.

I run a 8.5x25 Luepold TMR on my Varmint Match rifles. Why, because that is what my paycheck allows me to. Some day a US Optics, but not on 9+ rifles.
(Not all ar 8.5-25 btw).

I shot a buddies NF this weekend in his 6xc. Didn't look at magnification, but guessing 5.5-22power?


No bullshit, I thought the clarity sucked ass. I fired the first shot w/o adjustment, then adjusted for all others up to 12 shots.

I would really like to get behind that rifle again and shoot that optic more. The reticle seemed faint and the glass almost foggy.

This is not a review, just a one time situation in overcast enviorment. Hell, with his Vias break, maybe the objective was dusty/dirty???

I can tell you that my other buddies Varmint optic (Swarovski) and I do not get along. I am not fond of the blueish tint.

I think everybody view optics differently.

I am going thru this battle in my head, I am leaning towards Leupold because the scope I am looking at has a 40 mm obj and is 1/2 the size of a NF. The scope in question is going on my hunting 300 win, the only time I looked thru a NF was when I bought my IOR, the IOR was better optically to my eye but I did not spend alot of time with focusing. I have to decide by Monday, that is my mission for the weekend.

What Leupold you looking at? Have you looked into the 2.5-10 Nightforces? Smaller than the others and still gives a good power range.

I was looking at the Mark 4 4.5 X 14 X 40 LR/T M1 TMR as a matter of fact I just ordered one from Mike in Sacramento. I will own a NF someday but I think the size of this Leupold will do what I need it to. Thanks Guys

from a tactical point of view which one do you prefer..

for a hunting rifle what would you prefer ???

i think the reason this argument is happening is becouse both sides of the fence dont understand the others point of view for a tactical rifle you need something rugged that tracks with good glass illuminated reticles etc etc etc

for a hunting rig you just dont need the features ruggedness cs innovation and consistency that you do from a tactical rifle the qeustion is not realy which one is better its what do you feel is up to standards for your aplication ??? correct?

now we are on a website that is primarily based around tactical equipment... for that reason i make the assumption that uless other wise specified that the scope is going on a tactical rig. wich is the bases for my argument.. do you feed a performing dog kibble ????(i hope not) its a similar concept on my part why cut corners get the best thing you can afford nf are definantly 100% worth every penny more then a leupold if your puting it on an expensive rig that you wanna take out to some decent range.. if you can afford it go for a s&b but if you are going to put a 2000 dollar scope on a hunting rifle and your not overly fussed about the little things then by all means get a leupold enjoy it !! itll probly be great but i just cant fathem putting a leopold on a tactical rifle imo
