I am in the process of getting an affordable scope for my departments Rem 700 .308 win. I've been looking closely at the Nikon M 308 4-16x42. Has any one heard of this combo? It comes with a mount for AR10 but I'm looking at conventional mounts to go with it. I will be getting the Nikoplex not the BDC version.

I haven't heard about the combo of the scope and mount, but I know of the scope. I had an M308 for 1 whole day. Sold it, saved a little, and bought a Vortex.

I would stay away from it. How will you estimate range with the duplex reticle? I am sure the glass is clear and some people love them, but you should look for something else. Try looking back through some of the many reviews here. I would recommend taking a good long range class. They will typically go over propper equipment selection, and teach you how to use it. We have some great classes around here
I have been using one on my Remington 700 AAC .308 for a month now and thus far I am impressed. Obviously the M-308 Mounts will not work with the bolt action set up, but the med. Warne mounts I have work great.
I haven't taken this rifle past 200 yards yet but will next week. I use Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program to get the most accuracy out of my rifle,scope and ammo. Col. is correct that this scope does not estimate distance for you. I use a range finder when hunting and marked distances at the range. The glass is very clear and the 4-16 Magnification will get you out as far as you can shoot.

Look at this site and a few others on this forum, save a hundred or two more and get a Vortex PST or Bushnell Tactical.

I won't be shooting more than 500 yards and that's only in school. Mine will only be used in an urban environment no more than 250 yards (well may be used). I need something easy and quick and something that my department will buy into. Other than range estimation, any other problems. Is it a piece of crap, fall apart, or what? Does the duplex way of measuring work with MOA?
To better address my point of range estimation I should rephrase my first post.
Duplex reticles are not ideal for range estimation. My best range estimation is also usually done at the highest power. They commonly have 5 moa between the crosshair and bold post. Using a 5 moa subtension for range estimation would make it more difficult. If you are off by a little with your measurement it could result in a big miss. I always carry a range finder, but they dont always work. Fog, rain, and target size can make them useless. I try to practice my range estimation with the reticle during every session (If you dont use it, you lose it).
I understand you shoot at closer distances, so some of this stuff does not seem necessary now, but you may want these things later. I still think you should avoid the m308 for LE use. I would agree that Vortex is a great budget scope. The zero stop and reticle choice would be nice options over the nikon. The vortex would probably be easier to sell one day too. I would take a used Vortex pst over the Nikon.

Ok, wow I really like the Vortex 4-16x50. Like I said before, I'm going to school next month in Texas. I have very little trigger time and by little I mean maybe 50 rds on the Rem 700 with a Leupold 3.5-10x30 "hunting scope" but my department was impressed I guess. I'm trying to avoid going with a coin operated scope, and was honestly pretty certain I wanted a Nikon but after a lot of research I like the idea of dialing in my own adjustments. I also like the mil/mil, it just makes more sense to me.
I can't speak for the M-308, but I have the M-223 on my AR. I paid about $250 for it, so you get what you pay for. It is fine for shooting out to 200-300 or so. The glass is sub-par and it doesn't track worth a crap.

My shoot'n partner has an m308. The parallax only works at max. Turrets are very repeatable and he is good to 600 yds with it. His seems really "hazy or smokey or foggy" around the edges to me. . . I'm almost certain his is a lemon but he hits everything he aims at. Blows my mind.

Some of us dont agree on ring height here. You should figure out what works for you. Mediums would drive me nuts on a bolt gun. I always use lows, which is not always possible with objectives over 50mm or scope bases with more than 20moa cant. On AR platforms I use mediums.
I have put several 50mm vortex scopes with low rings (badger, seekins, vortex rings) on remington 700's with varmint barrels. They all cleared fine. Heavier barrels may have different results.

Jrey, did you ever say what your budget was for the scope? I assume the Dept. is footing the bill, so between scope and mount how much do you have to work with? I am assuming from your initial choice of the M308 that it is not much, and that you also still need to get rings. Have you considered the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10X44? It is matching mil/mil to make your dialing adjustments easier, and at $600 you are getting a good amount of scope. I believe they also offer a mil/LEO discount, so you could get the scope and a set of their rings (which are made by Seekins) for a under $700. For the range you are planning to shoot I think this scope would be just about ideal.
