Nikon M223 1-4x24 with/ Spot On Reticle
For a while now I’ve using an Eotech 552 on my M4 carbine. Having done a few shoots with the M223 I wanted to try it on my own rifle. I was first introduced to the Nikon Spot On system last year at a shoot held by Nikon. I figured I would shoot some matches with the M223 and see how I did compared to the Eotech.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was how he scope comes with flip up lense covers. For once I didn’t have to fool around with Butler Creeks and getting the wrong size. Nikon did a great job with the turrets as far as nice positive clicks and how they are the type that you can pull up to reset to zero. My only complaint is there aren’t any markings to know where you are in reference to how many turns out the turrets are.
The glass and overall look of the scope is awesome on my rifle. I also went with the M223 mount as well.
The best part about the install is that the one-piece mount doesn’t have to be lapped to make sure rings are in proper alignment. With 20MOA built in long distance work will be no problem. I used my bore sighter and in a few minutes I was ready for the range.
I pretty much sighted the rifle in and went straight to a match at my club. The match consisted of 50 shots from 50yds down to 7yds. What I did was record my zeros so when I got to the 7yd line I wouldn’t have to worry about the rifle shooting low. With the scope approx 2.5in over the bore at close range it becomes an issue. Being that I was new to the scope I didn’t expect to do as well as usual but figured I wouldn’t to too much off my mark. I ended up 4th place after a 2nd run at it. I was able to get on target quickly and having the 4x helped for headshots at 50yds. The scope kept zero perfectly even with me cranking the turrets up and down. My scores were on par with other matches I’ve shot previously. I think with a little more time I can easily pick up a few more points.
Lately I had a few friends shoot it to get some input. All seemed very pleased. Of course they would love to see zero stops, lit reticles, ECT but for the cost you can’t beat Nikon’s Quality. I did some shooting at a friend’s house this weekend with some tannerite. We set 1lb container up at 125yds and had no problem nailing them at 4x. With the 223 round any shots out to 200yds are pretty much dead on. The reticle is simple and offers a clean uncluttered view. I really love the optic and I plan on getting another for an M&P 15-22 Ill be getting soon.
