Interesting test case...

No elevators, no Internet, no Cell Towers.... no traffic lights....

Oh and it's 90 degrees down there... no AC!

Gonna be fun if that transformer stays down for more than a few hours.

Cheers,

And if a guy had a Cold-War Era Civil Defense Air Raid Siren to light off just to keep them jumpy, that'd be sweet!!!!

Wish we knew someone with one and had some video of it winding up.........

Have a generator and just put this on a loop ...

Fuckers would be running in circles until dawn.

It’s was on every news channel for hours last night. I can think of things I care less about, but not many. Cable news treated this like it was the most important event ever. I would have watched if they were rioting, but no. Why do they think the rest of the country cares? That was a bullshit local story.

Pretty much my exact thoughts when I turned on the tube yesterday evening...Other than a quick report of "New York took a power hit", why would there be a need for a play-by-play reporting? Why do I care?

It would take more than a day or 2 to see more than an individual here and there taking advantage of the situation. Not much really happened in that regional blackout back in 2004. Now if the power company crews and any LE along with local, state and federal government right from the get go told everyone to pound sand they are on their own that would be a completely different scenario. If the problem was addressed right away, even if it took a few days, the vast majority of people will have patience for a while.

They had a two day outage in 77 and there was rioting and looting. That was before everything relied on computers and the internet to function. Now you can't buy a loaf of bread if the power is off or the internet is down.
I've stated before that these people, who want to dictate every aspect of our existence to us, are completely reliant on us for their very existence.

Glad I live where I do as if your a local an all the power is off an they know you, you can just sign your name to a paper with amount an walk out the door. People from out of the area get real pissed, but thats the price you pay for relying on plastic. I always keep enough bucks to get home no matter how far away I am.

As to the comment "It is generally considered the low point of NYC history. " they reach a new low every passing day in flyover country. One of the reasons no one gives a shit about anything there or many other places an more.

At least one of the 3 main transformer/stations that was used to put the system back online back in '04 came from Winnipeg. A company named Federal Pioneer (I think) at the time built these behemoths and had one on hand. It was gigantic, with a hugely massive weight for going on a vehicle. Something along the lines of 172,000 tons.

A friend of mine was one of the 'few' people certified as well as owned a truck capable of towing this behemoth from Winnipeg straight through to New York. He had police escorts the whole way, that included closed roads/highways, support vehicles, you name it. It was quite the to-doo. I've got the blueprints of the unit here and the fancy-schmancey trailer/jeep/booster that was required.

Ready for round two?

Once upon a time long ago, we wound up without power for about a month after a huge storm.
Back in the days before computers and such & we lived where the nearest road was an hour walk away.

Can't say it really bothered us that badly as youngsters. (who knows what the grownups thought).
Plenty of canned food, bottled gas for the stove, kerosene pressure lanterns and a water supply that was all gravity fed.
Hot shower water provided by hoses running up and down the valleys of corrugated asbestos roofs soaking up the sun.
Lots of soaking each other with hoses.
Walk an hour and back to the local marketplace to get some fresh killed meat.

These days life would be pretty crazy for most if they had to live without power for a month.
Back before everything was so automated and computer driven it was not that big of a deal.

ok........Famous hockey player friend wants to see the picture.......

Oh man, I can only imagine what teenagers would be like if we were without power for several days... Out of all the age groups, I believe teenagers are the most attached to electronics... Not that we adults are not, but, we’ve lived a life without electronics, and they haven’t... Damn!!!

On a serious note....

Has anyone given thought to having hard copy printouts of their favourite carefully researched and collected adult entertainment material?
Well one just lives 3 doors down, she just walks over.:)
Everything I "Need" is laminated.

On a more serious note, the lynch pin/key stone is electrical power. That will get it started quicker than anything. The Transformer/s the STN referred to are not normal shelf items persay. The lead times for a bunch of those at once is years, in a stable world. Where are most of those type of Xformers located? Now think about that for a while,...

Just like AJ says about highways crippling a city.

A potato canon dragging a wire across a three phase line will shut it down instantly.

Don’t even need to be near the power/sub station.

When it’s time to go fishing, a few good men can cripple a city.

Yeah, yeah, big deal...

I was in Midtown NYC when the Northeast Blackout of 1965 hit. I had just gotten off the Subway at the Port Authority Bus Terminal when the escalator I was on stopped dead with me between floors. I walked up the rest of the way to the bus platforms, and the only lights still on were the bus headlights. After my bus departed, no other buses came in from NJ, and when we came up out of the Lincoln Tunnel, the entire skyline of NYC was totally blacked out.

By the time I got all the way home to Newark, NJ; we were living through a state of emergency, but we had power in Newark. Rumors were flying including one about sabotage by Russian Sleeper agents.

Eight states, and Ontario (the actual point of origin); 30,000,000 people affected. It was like a holiday in NYC at first; and then it got ugly when the creepos filtered out of the woodwork.

I’ve been thinking that there is a good novel/ how to book in this. Sort of a 2020 Turner diaries. Which I need to read one of these days.
