what do you need specifically? </div></div>

Personal knowledge/experience from someone who has used one.

For instance, the FLIR's we have, hand held, have to be re-calibrated each time you use them, and require about 3 minutes before you can get them from pouch into action. This was dissapointing considering what we paid for the FLIR's.
I want to know if the same kind of BS is there with the TAM-14.

Re: NIVISYS TAM-14 Thermal Acquisition Monocular

reason I asked is because I should be able to get you all the info you need about the TAM, because we work closely with Nivisys.

Close enough to get a demo unit sent to me at the Police Department here?

I had one of those in my hands Friday evening. I did like it very much. Size, controls, and function were right on. The MTM beat the shit out of the FLIR units we have.
The guy who brought the MTM said our FLIR units were two years and a generation behind the current FLIR.

Re: NIVISYS TAM-14 Thermal Acquisition Monocular

I bought 4 TAM-14's (25deg) in 09 to start my hog control company. I had problems with them right off the bat. The company was slow at first to help but rapidly turned around. They replaced 2 that had bad cores and I had no further problems with them. I ended up upgrading 2 of them to 12 deg Scorpions and LOVE those.I used the 25 deg for a few months and upgraded to the 11 deg on one, with a 3x lens.. ITS AWESOME! I used it 20 days a month on a light month. I can tell the difference between deer and hogs past 800 yards. NiVISYS customer service has improved bigtime since I bought mine and I enjoy doing business with them now. They bent over backwards to make me happy. If your going to use a TAM, I would suggest the 11 deg and an extender. Very robust, very small and starts up in 3-4 seconds. The FLIR takes 30 seconds. Also I have mounted them to 308's, 223's, crossbows, air rifles and a 12g.. MANY hogs have died.

The reason I started this question post was a vendor had a bunch of other department trade ins that they were selling. They would not give me a price unless I sent a serious indicator of purchase to them. With that wrinkle, I really wanted to hear from somebody who had used them before any kind of commitment to purchase, and you can see from the dates on the posts, none came forward soon enough to help me.
And I still don't know what they wanted for the used ones.

Re: NIVISYS TAM-14 Thermal Acquisition Monocular

If the Tam 14 still uses the 160x120 30 micron pitch array( I believe that is what use to go into the device),you will find a huge difference in tech thats out now.
NVTHERM models will show you need 3 pixels to identify a target.
Current uncooled COTS sensors are at or below 17 micron pitch and use 1280x960 array's.
Uncooled MIL stuff exceeds that and cooled sensors are in another world alltogether......

Here is an important thing to remember , if it is an a-Si detector,do not point it at a high source of thermal energy( sun etc) you will damage the unit. VOx detectors dont have this limitation

I have the TAM-14. I can attest to it being a great FLIR. It is now currently the choice of Homeland Security. Top notch equipment! Can be used as a handheld monocular, weapons sight, of helmet mount (included). The lens is pure germanium. It can be used in daylight, since it utilizes heat signatures and headlights and bright lights do not blind the image. It works in zero light, snow, and desert environments. Best tactical FLIR I have ever had! Made by Raytheon. The specs are very impressive! It's restricted and cannot be exported for obvious reasons.

jwramp was using the unit as a clip on (Probably 2x) ... as you can see, it still has effective PID... If you can find them, Id definitely pick up a couple at the 11k price tag. Easily the best unit on the market

@Horta, the Nivisys UTAC look pretty cool. What are your thoughts on them? http://www.nivisys.com/en/products/thermal_systems/utac_32/

"The UTAC Series from Nivisys is the latest development of our unity magnification clip-
on thermal imager. This compact sight is weapon mounted forward of your day sight
without any requirement to re-sight your weapon and allows for fast reaction in rapidly
changing combat environments."
